La ciudad de Lázaro Cárdenas se localiza al sur del Estado, en las coordenadas 17º57' de latitud norte y 102º12' de longitud oeste, a una altura de 10 metros sobre el nivel del mar. La cual esta propensa a varios desastres naturales ya que la ciudad se encuentra en una zona sísmica y en los últimos años se han registrados varios temblores, inundaciones, tormentas y huracanes Uno de los momentos críticos con los que se enfrenta la ciudad son la provocación de fugas de gases de la empresa ArcelorMittal ya que la zona industrial está ubicada en una gran parte de la ciudad y trabajan con materiales tóxicos para el ser humano, otros problemas con los que se encuentra son: inundaciones en temporadas de lluvias, huracanes, tornados, incendios estructurales, incendios forestales, incendios de pasto, basura, flamazos, explosiones y fugas de gas en hogares y negocios. Los desastres naturales incontrolables, así como ciertos problemas ambientales propiciados por el propio hombre, han contribuido a que la Ciudad de Lázaro Cárdenas tome las medidas necesarias, programas u opciones que ayuden a mitigar la problemática de siniestros existentes. De allí la necesidad de establecer un cuerpo de bomberos. Con la creación de este rubro se tendería a mitigar estos siniestros sobre la población mediante la seguridad y protección de las personas. En la Ciudad no existe un edificio que cuente con las instalaciones y espacios suficientes para realizar las funciones de una estación de bomberos, y de esta manera poder servir mejor a la ciudad. Tomando en cuenta que la ciudad cuenta con una población de 178,817 habitantes1 la cual es una cifra adecuada para la solicitación de una estación de bomberos ya que las normas de SEDESOL cuestiona que su dotación es necesaria en ciudades mayores de 100,000 habitantes en vinculación directa con las vialidades principales, cuyo acceso sea fluido a cualquier punto de la ciudad.
