Sobre la certeza: la respuesta de Moore y Wittgenstein al problema del escepticismo sobre el mundo exterior

Abstract

In the present work I review two essays by the British philosopher George Edward Moore, ‘In Defense of Common Sense’ (1925) and ‘Proof of an External World’ (1939), under the light of the reflections presented by of Ludwig Wittgenstein in his work On Certainty (1950-51/1969). Moore attempts, in the mentioned essays, to provide a definitive refutation of skepticism about the external world, thereby putting an end to what Kant famously called, in the Critique of Pure Reason, “the scandal of philosophy”. Unfortunately, few philosophers have agreed that the proof offered by Moore is sufficient to refute skepticism about the external world, or put an end to the scandal identified by Kant. In the thesis I argue that, although Moore’s arguments are not conclusive, Wittgenstein extracts from them original considerations that allow him to overcome the philosophical problem of skepticism about the external world. In particular, Wittgenstein examines how philosophers have used concepts such as doubt, belief and knowledge, among info:eu-repo/semantics/others, and shows that the problem of skepticism arises in the context of a misuse of these concepts. To put it in Wittgenstein’s terms, the problem arises due to confusions about which language game is being played when these problems arise in philosophical, as opposed to everyday, discourse. Furthermore, I argue that On Certainty is not representative of a “third period” in Wittgenstein’s development, as some authors have argued on the basis of the introduction in this text of the novel concept of grammatical or hinge propositions. Rather, on my reading, in On Certainty Wittgenstein continues deploying the methodological orientation that appears in the Philosophical Investigations, according to which the task of philosophy is not to construct theories or systems of ideas, but to dissolve problems that originate in linguistic misunderstandings.

En el presente trabajo se revisan dos ensayos del filósofo británico George Edward Moore, ‘Defensa del sentido común’ (1925) y ‘Prueba del mundo exterior’ (1939), a la luz de las reflexiones presentadas por Ludwig Wittgenstein en su obra Sobre la certeza (1950-51/1969). En los ensayos mencionados, Moore pretende refutar de una vez por todas al escéptico que duda de la existencia del mundo exterior, poniendo de esta manera fin a lo que Kant célebremente denominó, en la Crítica de la Razón Pura, “el escándalo de la filosofía”. Desafortunadamente pocos filósofos han estado de acuerdo que la prueba ofrecida por Moore sea suficiente para refutar definitivamente al escepticismo, o poner fin definitivo al escándalo identificado por Kant. En la tesis se propone que, aunque los argumentos de Moore no son completamente convincentes, Wittgenstein desprende de ellos consideraciones originales que le permiten superar el problema filosófico del escepticismo. En particular, Wittgenstein se replantea los usos que los filósofos le han dado a conceptos como ‘dudar’, ‘creer’, ‘saber’, entre otros, y muestra que el problema de la duda respecto de la existencia del mundo exterior nace de un mal empleo de ellos y otros relacionados. Para ponerlo en términos del propio Wittgenstein, el problema filosófico se debe a estar jugando mal el juego de lenguaje en turno, a estar confundido respecto de qué juego de lenguaje se está jugando. Asimismo, en este trabajo se sostiene que Sobre la certeza no hace parte de un “tercer periodo” en el pensamiento de Wittgenstein, como han afirmado algunos autores, basándose en la introducción en este texto tardío del concepto de proposiciones gramaticales o bisagra. De acuerdo con la lectura propuesta, en Sobre la certeza Wittgenstein continúa de manera fundamental con la orientación metodológica desplegada en las Investigaciones filosóficas, según la cual la tarea de la filosofía no es construir teorías o sistemas de ideas, sino disolver problemas originados en la incomprensión del complejo funcionamiento del lenguaje.
