El arte de narrar en Walter Benjamín. Fin o transformación

Abstract

The present paper offers a reading of the essay “The storyteller” by Walter Benjamin, specifically concerning the concept the end of the art of storytelling pointed out in this text. We decant for an optimistic interpretation of that asseveration, demonstrating that such culmination it is not absolutely but only relative. We are mainly basing on the benjaminian premise -which, at the same time we prove in this work- that affirms that every art is in a constant evolution, as much of its means as of its techniques, its platforms, but mainly of its social function. While Benjamin defines the art of storytelling as the faculty of exchanging experiences, based on the analysis and exposure of a considerable part of his work, we take that definition to a broader level, demonstrating that it is not only the capacity of exchanging experiences, but the faculty of exchanging the experience, understood as truth, wisdom and tradition. To prove this, first we display how is it that Benjamin conceives the experience in this three facets, and how storytelling expounds each one of them. At last, we try to demonstrate that, as a consequence of the evolution in which the art of storytelling is immersed, its social function, from being the exchange of the experience, it has transformed into elaborate the feedstock of itself (task adjudged by Benjamin himself), wherewith the declining aspect of the art of storytelling would be refuted, and it would be confirmed its transformative character.

El presente trabajo ofrece una lectura del ensayo “El narrador” de Walter Benjamín específicamente del aspecto referente al fin del arte de narrar que se señala en ese texto. Nos decantamos por una interpretación optimista de tal aseveración, demostrando que tal culminación no lo es absolutamente, sino tan sólo relativa. Nos basamos principalmente en la premisa benjaminiana, que a su vez queda probada en este trabajo, de que todo arte se encuentra en una constante evolución, tanto de sus medios, como de sus técnicas, de sus plataformas, pero sobre todo de su función social. Si bien Benjamín define al arte de narrar como la facultad de intercambiar experiencias, con base en el análisis y exposición de buena parte de su obra nosotros llevamos a un nivel más amplio aquella definición, demostrando que no sólo es la capacidad de intercambiar experiencias, sino la facultad de intercambiar la experiencia, entendida como verdad, sabiduría y tradición. Para probarlo, primero exponemos cómo es que Benjamín concibe la experiencia en estas tres facetas, y cómo la narración expone a cada una de ellas. Por último, intentamos demostrar que, como consecuencia de la evolución en la que el arte de narrar se encuentra inmerso, su función social, de ser la de intercambiar la experiencia, se ha transformado en la de elaborar las materias primas de misma (tarea que el mismo Benjamín le adjudica), con lo cual quedaría refutado el aspecto declinante del arte de narrar, y confirmado su carácter transformativo.
