Reseña crítica a la obra "Práctica y ética de la eutanasia" de Asunción Álvarez del Río

Abstract

The present review seeks to expose, resume and generate criticism and debate of the book Practice and ethics of euthanasia by Asunción Álvarez del Río, current researcher at the UNAM. Her work focuses on seven chapters which I follow in the same order, not to mention that to carry out this work I include some additional citations to complement the defense of my position from that of our author, as well as I integrate recent approvals of this practice after the edition of the book. Talking about assisted death is not easy, precisely because we know that in terminal illnesses each case is different and if we were empathic we would know that we cannot judge with absolute ease, but we would like to defend a position that advocates in favor of human life. Asunción Álvarez opts for a support to the legalization of euthanasia, considering that the patient has the right to decide about his/her life and health in the incurable disease, and if his/her necessity is to request euthanasia this should be respected, as well as the protection of the doctor who performs it, and avoid the secrecy of such practice. For that reason, I focus on the definition of euthanasia and medically assisted suicide to say that both practices seek to alleviate the unbearable suffering caused by the incurable disease, however we will soon realize that both forms of death do not always follow the law in the countries where these have been approved, and that abuses are committed. And because of that, our job will be precisely the defense of life and the commitment that palliative care has in the process of the disease, stating that a good attention can prevent a patient’s request for euthanasia, and that legalizing it, does not solve the problem.

Con la presente reseña se busca exponer, retomar y generar la crítica y el debate del libro Práctica y ética de la eutanasia de Asunción Álvarez del Río, actual investigadora de la UNAM. Su obra se centra en siete capítulos los cuales sigo en el mismo orden, sin dejar de mencionar que para realizar este trabajo incluyo algunas citas adicionales para complementar la defensa de mi postura frente a la de nuestra autora, así como integro recientes aprobaciones de esta práctica posteriores a la edición del libro. Hablar sobre la muerte asistida no es sencillo, precisamente porque sabemos que en las enfermedades terminales cada caso es distinto y si fuésemos empáticos sabríamos que de entrada no podemos juzgar con rotunda facilidad, pero si nos gustaría defender una postura que abogue en favor de la vida humana. Asunción Álvarez opta por un apoyo a la legalización de la eutanasia, considerando que el paciente tiene derecho a decidir sobre su vida y su salud en la enfermedad incurable, y si su necesidad es solicitar la eutanasia debería ser respetada, así como la protección del médico que la realice, y evitar la clandestinidad de dicha práctica. Por ello me centro en la definición de eutanasia y suicidio medicamente asistido, para decir que ambas practicas buscan aliviar el sufrimiento insoportable causado por la enfermedad incurable, pero pronto nos daremos cuenta que ambas formas de muerte no siempre siguen la ley en los países donde estas han sido aprobadas, y que los abusos se comenten. Por lo que nuestra labor en este trabajo será precisamente la defensa de la vida y el compromiso que los cuidados paliativos tienen en el proceso de la enfermedad, argumentando que una buena atención puede prevenir una solicitud de eutanasia, y que legalizarla no soluciona el problema.
