La tensión entre retórica y filosofía en la Aspasia de Platón

Abstract

This research intends to make a historical-speculative analysis of the figure of Aspasia from the Platonic dialogue Menexeno. It seems to be a constant and imperative necessity, to discredit the intellectual historical figure of Aspasia, ignoring the various extant fragments that speak to us about his life. The hypothesis that will be developed considers that Plato places Aspasia as the central figure of the Menexeno dialogue, to exemplify the participation of women in intellectual circles. Contrasting the historical basis of the text of Amalia González Suárez where the hypothesis that Plato intends to disqualify rhetoric in a more forceful way than in the Gorgias dialogue, will allow us to reflect on whether the appearance of Aspasia in Menexeno is used to make a clear distinction between the thought of the sophists, as Protagoras or Gorgias, or is rather a response to the historical reality of the very figure of Aspasia. I do not discredit the position of González Suárez, which deals with the idea that Plato intends with Menexeno to disqualify rhetoric, discrediting the apparent need that exists to condemn to silence the feminine perspective of Aspasia, its historical figure and its method of teaching. To my consideration, the error of these studies lies in the hasty judgment that is made of a person for reasons external to his life and his thinking. This work will allow to have a perspective of the problems that are faced when investigating the female characters, as well as to analyze the different positions that are held around the life of the philosophers; making direct dialogue with authors and texts impossible, as well as denying us, in some way, the possibility of reinterpreting the history of philosophy.

Esta investigación pretende hacer un análisis histórico- especulativo1 de la figura de Aspasia a partir del diálogo platónico Menexeno. Parece ser una constante e imperante necesidad, desacreditar la figura histórico intelectual de Aspasia, pasando por alto los diversos fragmentos existentes que nos hablan sobre su vida2. La hipótesis que se desarrollará considera que Platón sitúa a Aspasia como personaje central del diálogo Menexeno, para ejemplificar la participación de las mujeres en los círculos intelectuales. Contrastar la base histórica del texto de Amalia González Suárez3 donde se desarrolla la hipótesis de que Platón pretende descalificar a la retórica de una manera más contundente que en el diálogo Gorgias, nos permitirá reflexionar si la aparición de Aspasia en el Menexeno se utiliza para hacer una clara distinción entre el pensamiento de los sofistas, como Protágoras o Gorgias, o es más bien una respuesta a la realidad histórica de la propia figura de Aspasia. No desacredito la postura de González Suárez, en la que se maneja la idea de que Platón pretende con el Menexeno descalificar la retórica, desacredito la aparente necesidad que existe de condenar al silencio la perspectiva femenina de Aspasia, su figura histórica y su método de enseñanza. A mi consideración, el error de estos estudios radica en el apresurado juicio que se hace de una persona por motivos externos a su vida y su pensamiento. Este trabajo permitirá tener una perspectiva de las problemáticas que se enfrentan al investigar a los personajes femeninos, así como analizar las diferentes posturas que se tienen en torno a la vida de las filósofas; imposibilitando el diálogo directo con los autores y textos, así como negándonos, de algún modo, la posibilidad de reinterpretar la historia de la filosofía.
