Abstract

In accordance with the provisions of the Royal Decree in Cuenca on June 12, 1642 to grant titles and privileges to various populations, the request of Don Agustín de Carranza y Salcedo and the offer of Don Gabriel López Peralta of the land of the Mayorazgo de Tarimoro, On February 9, 1644, the Viceroy Don García Sarmiento de Sotomayor, Count of Salvatierra and Marquis of Sobroso asked Felipe IV King of Spain for a Royal Certificate that would grant him the title of Ciudad Real de la Nueva España (Salvatierra 2005). GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION: The city of Salvatierra, municipal seat, is located at 100° 53´ 46´´ longitude west of the Greenwich meridian and at 20° 12´ 56´´ north latitude; its height above sea level is 1,749 meters. It limits to the north with the municipality of Tarimoro; to the south with Acámbaro and the state of Michoacán; to the west with the municipalities of Yuriria and Santiago Maravatío and to the Northwest with that of Jaral del Progreso. The surface of the municipality comprises 507.70 square kilometers, equivalent to 1.66% of the territory of the state. Its territorial division is made up of 64 localities (GEG 2005). CLIMATE: The maximum temperature is 33.4°C, the minimum is 2°C and the annual average is 18.1°C. Rainfall is 730 millimeters per year (GEG 2005). FLORA AND FAUNA: On the banks of the rivers juniper, willow, reedbed and pine abound in the mountainous areas. The fauna is made up of rabbits, opossums, coyotes, squirrels, coral snakes, alicante, skunks, lizards and river fish, and among the birds there are buzzards, hawks and pigeons (GEG 2005).

Conforme a lo dispuesto por la Real Cédula en cuenca el 12 de junio de 1642 para conceder títulos y privilegios a varia poblaciones, la solicitud de Don Agustín de Carranza y Salcedo y el ofrecimiento de don Gabriel López Peralta de la tierra del Mayorazgo de Tarimoro, el 9 de Febrero de 1644, el Virrey Don García Sarmiento de Sotomayor, Conde de Salvatierra y Marqués de Sobroso pide a Felipe IV Rey de España una Cédula Real que le otorgara el título de Ciudad Real de la Nueva España (Salvatierra 2005). UBICACIÓN GEOGRÁFICA: La ciudad de Salvatierra, cabecera municipal, está situada en los 100° 53´ 46´´ longitud oeste del meridiano de Greenwich y a los 20° 12´ 56´´ latitud norte; su altura sobre el nivel del mar es de 1,749 metros. Limita al norte con el municipio de Tarimoro; al sur con el de Acámbaro y el estado de Michoacán; al oeste con los municipios de Yuriria y Santiago Maravatío y al Noroeste con el de Jaral del Progreso. La superficie del municipio comprende 507.70 kilómetros cuadrados, equivalente al 1.66 % del territorio del estado. Su división territorial la conforman 64 localidades (GEG 2005). CLIMA: La temperatura máxima es de 33.4°C, la mínima de 2°C y la media anual de 18.1°C. La precipitación pluvial es de 730 milímetros anuales (GEG 2005). FLORA Y FAUNA: En la ribera de los ríos abundan el sabino, sauce, carrizal y pino en las áreas montañosas. La fauna está formada por conejo, tlacuache, coyote, ardilla, coralillo, alicante, zorrillo, lagartija y peces de río, y entre las aves hay zopilotes, gavilanes y palomas (GEG 2005).
