Daniel Cosío Villegas: La búsqueda de la nación mexicana (1950-1968)

Abstract

The life and intellectual work of Daniel Cosío Villegas is an important issue due to the cultural heritage he left to Mexicans in the 20th century. We must mention that this character was the founder of important institutions dedicated to teaching and disseminating history in Mexico. , without being a historian by training. Reason why, it is important to carry out an analysis of the family, school, professional and intellectual life of Daniel Cosío Villegas to know the circumstances and the process that led him to be one of the most important historians of the 20th century. We must mention that this work is dedicated specifically to the study of the decade from 1950 to 1968, a period in which Cosío Villegas dedicated himself solely to his work as a historian, both in historiographical production and in teaching, an activity he carried out within El Colegio de México, an institution whose creation was due to the project he developed after his stay in Europe. Thanks to his inclination for history, Daniel Cosío Villegas founded specialized magazines in the study of the past and social sciences such as: Historia Mexicana, Cuadernos Americanos, Trimestre Económico and Foro Internacional, publications where he opened forums for discussion, study and criticism of the problems of Latin America and Mexico. In these publications, Cosío Villegas invited readers to perceive history as an instrument to know the past, confront the present and the immediate future. It is significant to mention that this intellectual and promoter of knowledge founded one of the publishing houses that up to now continues to be one of the most important in Latin America, we are referring to the Fondo de Cultura Económica, an editorial space where he had the collaboration and support of large intellectuals like Antonio Caso, Pedro Henríquez Ureña and Eduardo Villaseñor.

La vida y labor intelectual de Daniel Cosío Villegas es un tema importante por la herencia cultural que dejó a los mexicanos del siglo XX. Debemos mencionar que este personaje fue el fundador de importantes instituciones dedicadas a la enseñanza y la difusión de la historia en México, sin ser historiador de formación. Razón por la cual, es importante realizar un análisis de la vida familiar, escolar, profesional e intelectual de Daniel Cosío Villegas para conocer las circunstancias y el proceso que lo llevó a ser uno de los historiadores más importantes del siglo XX. Debemos referir que este trabajo está abocado específicamente al estudio de la década de 1950 a 1968, periodo en el que Cosío Villegas se dedicó únicamente a su labor como historiador tanto en la producción historiográfica como en la enseñanza, actividad que desempeñó al interior de El Colegio de México, institución cuya creación se debió al proyecto elaborado por mismo después de su estancia en Europa. Gracias a su inclinación por la historia Daniel Cosío Villegas fundó revistas especializadas en el estudio del pasado y las ciencias sociales como son: Historia Mexicana, Cuadernos Americanos, Trimestre Económico y Foro Internacional, publicaciones donde abrió foros de discusión, estudio y crítica de los problemas de América Latina y México. En estas publicaciones Cosío Villegas invitó a los lectores a percibir la historia como un instrumento para conocer el pasado, enfrentar el presente y el futuro inmediato. Es significativo mencionar que este intelectual y promotor del conocimiento fundó una de las editoriales que hasta el momento sigue figurando como una de las más importantes en América Latina, nos referimos al Fondo de Cultura Económica, espacio editorial donde contó con la colaboración y apoyo de grandes intelectuales como Antonio Caso, Pedro Henríquez Ureña y Eduardo Villaseñor.
