Historiografía sobre Agustín de Iturbide

Abstract

The present historiographical approach to the subject of the life and work of Agustín de Iturbide seeks to condense and analyze the different and scattered comments that have been made on this character of national history throughout the almost two centuries of independent life of our country. This is because Iturbide, as a royalist soldier and fundamental participant in Mexican political history, has generated passionate discussions and produced a good number of biographies that either exalt him or, on the contrary, denigrate him, so it is necessary to find the corresponding explanation regarding why historiography falls into such notorious disagreements. This thesis is justified by the absence of a study that globally addresses and brings together the different Iturbidista historians and biographers, in which the works they produced are related to the ideologies in vogue and the historical context in which they were written. Likewise, because there are themes and characters in Mexican historiography on which an "unjustifiable and sometimes shameful condemnation has weighed, which has prevented its serene study or its analysis without the emotional, passionate and political charge" that at a certain moment the inflexible judgment and partial vision of a particular vision of the political history of Mexico poured on them. Since Robert Potash's call at the beginning of the 1960s to approach history with other approaches, there have been new interpretations of Mexican historiography, an issue that it will be necessary to elucidate if it has been fulfilled in the case of Iturbidista historiography.

El presente acercamiento historiográfico en torno al tema de la vida y obra de Agustín de Iturbide se busca condensar y analizar los distintos y dispersos comentarios que sobre este personaje de la historia nacional se han hecho a lo largo de los casi dos siglos de vida independiente de nuestro país. Esto es debido a que Iturbide, como soldado realista y partícipe fundamental de la historia política mexicana, ha generado apasionadas discusiones y producido una buena cantidad de biografías que, tanto lo exaltan o, de forma contraria, lo denigran, por lo que es preciso encontrar la explicación correspondiente respecto al por qué la historiografía cae en tan notorios desacuerdos. Esta tesis se justifica al no existir un estudio que aborde y reúna de forma global a los distintos historiadores y biógrafos iturbidistas, en el que se relacionen las obras que realizaron con las ideologías en boga y el contexto histórico en el que fueron escritas. Asimismo, porque hay temas y personajes en la historiografía mexicana sobre los que pesa una “injustificable y en ocasiones vergonzosa condena que ha impedido su estudio sereno o su análisis sin la carga emotiva, pasional y política” que en un momento determinado el juicio inflexible y parcial de una visión particular de la historia política de México virtió sobre ellos. A partir del llamado de Robert Potash a inicios de la década de 1960 por abordar la historia con otros enfoques, ha habido nuevas interpretaciones de la historiografía mexicana, cuestión que habrá que dilucidar si se ha cumplido en el caso de la historiografía iturbidista.
