El convento agustino de Valladolid de Michoacán en el Siglo XVII. LA conformación de su poderío económico, 1590-1666

Abstract

Trying to talk about the 17th century is not easy at all, both due to the lack of particular studies of this period and because of the concept in which some academics still hold it, it has been called the Middle Ages of New Spain Mexico and it has been accused of being an immobile and not very dynamic period, but this has been, rather, the product of the comparison with the periods that preceded and followed it, the 16th and 18th centuries, explosive temporalities that constitute milestones in colonial history and that squeezed the 17th to be considered as "the medium" without much to show for it. However, the 17th century was the century that housed the consolidation of the New Spain institutions and that saw the birth of many other peculiarities of the Colony, therefore it inherited many of these characteristics from the 18th century. The seventeenth century, like the Middle Ages, are not opaque or obscure periods, which have nothing to reveal, but consolidation temporalities, which only need a more careful inspection of their sources. The spiritual conquest carried out by the Iberian Peninsula, through the mendicant orders, was as important, if not more, than the military one, since without it the relatively peaceful conservation for almost three centuries of a territory would not have been possible. as vast as New Spain was without an armed force; Furthermore, it must be remembered that the Spain that conquered pre-Columbian Mexico was a country with strong medieval characteristics, where the civil was not yet totally separated from the religious, hence one of the reasons for the introduction of the Church in America, specifically in the New Spain.

Tratar de hablar del siglo XVII no es nada fácil, tanto por la falta de estudios particulares de esta época como por el concepto en que todavía algunos académicos le tienen, se le ha llamado la edad media del México novohispano y se le ha tachado de ser un periodo inmóvil y poco dinámico, pero ello ha sido, más bien, producto de la comparación con los periodos que le anteceden y siguen, los siglos XVI y XVIII, temporalidades explosivas que constituyen hitos en la historia colonial y que apretujan al XVII para considerársele como “el medio” sin mucho que mostrar. Sin embargo, el siglo XVII fue la centuria que albergó el afianzamiento de las instituciones novohispanas y que vio nacer muchas otras peculiaridades de la Colonia, por tanto le heredó muchas de estas características al XVIII. El siglo XVII, al igual que la Edad Media, no son periodos opacos, ni obscuros, que no tienen nada que revelar, sino temporalidades de consolidación, que sólo necesitan una inspección más cuidadosa de sus fuentes. La conquista espiritual llevada a cabo por la península Ibérica, a través de las órdenes mendicantes, fue, tanto o más importante, que la militar, ya que sin ella no hubiera sido posible la conservación, relativamente pacífica, por casi tres siglos de un territorio tan vasto como lo fue la Nueva España sin una fuerza armada; además hay que recordar que la España que conquistó al México precolombino, era un país con fuertes características medievales, donde aún lo civil no estaba totalmente separado de lo religioso, de aquí una de las razones para la introducción de la Iglesia en América, concretamente en la Nueva España.
