Una aproximación al estudio de las cofradías novohispanas durante el siglo XVIII

Abstract

The present study on the New Spanish brotherhoods, has its origin in the need to delve into the analysis and knowledge of one of the most important institutions in the history of ecclesiastical corporations, since these were presented as an associative formula par excellence, where social actors from various estates converged on the same axis sharing common interests, both social, religious and economic. Thus, they are revealed as a microcosm that recreates the multiple values ​​of society, which are manifested and reinforced through the various symbolic acts carried out inside and outside the brotherhoods, where religious festivities, mutual aid and a series of spiritual exercises play a leading role. The wide propagation of these organizations, within New Spain, indicates the degree of effectiveness and importance that they had as an association, where the internal relations of the members consolidated a group idiosyncrasy, which was reflected in various ways. All that has been said motivated me to deepen the study of these secular institutions, proposing as an axis problem to know what is the function that the brotherhoods played within the social, economic and religious sphere of New Spain during the 18th century. Likewise, the objectives around which my analysis revolves are focused on knowing the purposes of the brotherhoods, and how they were put into practice, reflecting their function within society. New Spain has been chosen as the study center, because this work aims to show a global vision of the brotherhoods, and this can only be obtained through an overall analysis, where the so-called lay congregations are presented in their broadest and most significant functions.

El presente estudio sobre las cofradías novohispanas, tiene su origen en la necesidad de ahondar en el análisis y conocimiento de una de las instituciones más importantes en la historia de las corporaciones eclesiásticas, ya que éstas se presentaron como fórmula asociativa por excelencia, donde actores sociales de diversos estamentos convergían en un mismo eje compartiendo intereses comunes, tanto sociales como religiosos y económicos. Así, se revelan como un microcosmos que recrea los múltiples valores de la sociedad, los cuales se manifiestan y refuerzan por medio de los diversos actos simbólicos realizados al interior y exterior de las cofradías, donde la festividad religiosa, la ayuda mutua y una serie de ejercicios espirituales juegan un papel protagónico. La amplia propagación de estas organizaciones, dentro de la Nueva España, nos indica el grado de efectividad e importancia que poseían como asociación, donde las relaciones internas de los miembros consolidaban una idiosincrasia de grupo, misma que era reflejada de manera variada. Todo lo dicho me motivó a profundizar en el estudio de estas instituciones de laicos, proponiéndome como problemática eje conocer cuál es la función que las cofradías jugaron dentro de la esfera social, económica y religiosa de la Nueva España durante el siglo XVIII. Asimismo, los objetivos en torno a los cuales gira mi análisis se centran en saber los fines de las cofradías, y cómo éstos se llevaron a la práctica, plasmándose su función dentro de la sociedad. Se ha elegido Nueva España como centro de estudio, debido a que este trabajo pretende mostrar una visión global de las cofradías, y esto sólo se puede obtener por medio de un análisis de conjunto, donde las denominadas congregaciones laicales sean presentadas en sus más amplias y significativas funciones.
