El Colegio y los Colegiales Michoacán de San Román Nonato, 1628-1816

Abstract

At the beginning of the 17th century, the diocese of Michoacán only offered its young men a priestly career. If they wanted to continue with another career, they had to move to the capital of the Viceroyalty of New Spain, where the most important higher institution, the Royal University, was located. from Mexico, to get out of the ordinary. There the careers of Arts, Theology, Canons, Laws and Medicine were taught, in order to obtain the corresponding degrees of bachelor, licentiate, master or doctor in any of the aforementioned areas. Unfortunately, not all Michoacáns could achieve it, that was only possible if they were from a wealthy family. However, on April 15, 1624, Fray Alonso Enríquez de Toledo was appointed to occupy the miter of the diocese of Michoacán, which remained vacant due to the death of the Augustinian friar Baltazar de Covarrubias. During his administration, the new bishop realized that among his collaborators there was no person prepared to occupy the position of provider; This was reason enough for the prelate to found a school in Mexico City, so that the young people of his diocese, who did not have sufficient financial means, could go to study and graduate at the University of Mexico, especially in the Faculties of Canons and Laws. Said institution was legally founded in 1628; however, it could not start activities due to various inconveniences that arose and it was not until the year 1653, when the bishop had already died, that at the request of the Mercedarian religious, the efforts to carry out the work were resumed; this time he had the support of the Viceroy Duke of Alburquerque.

A principios del siglo XVII, la diócesis de Michoacán ofertaba únicamente a sus jóvenes la carrera sacerdotal, si deseaban continuar con otra carrera forzosamente tenían que trasladarse a la capital del virreinato de la Nueva España, donde se hallaba la institución superior más importante la Real Universidad de México, para salir de lo común. Ahí se impartían las carreras de Artes, Teología, Cánones, Leyes y Medicina, con el fin de obtener los grados correspondientes de bachiller, licenciado, maestro o doctor en cualquiera de las áreas antes mencionadas. Desafortunadamente, no todos los michoacanos podían lograrlo, eso sólo era posible, si se era de una familia acomodada económicamente. Sin embargo, se nombró el 15 de abril de 1624 a fray Alonso Enríquez de Toledo para ocupar la mitra de la diócesis de Michoacán, que quedó vacante por deceso del fraile agustino Baltazar de Covarrubias. Durante su administración el nuevo obispo se percató que entre sus colaboradores no había persona preparada para ocupar el cargo de provisor; esta fue razón suficiente para que el prelado fundara un colegio en la ciudad de México, con el objeto de que los jóvenes de su diócesis, que no contaran con los medios económicos suficientes, pudieran ir a estudiar y graduarse en la Universidad de México, especialmente en las Facultades de Cánones y Leyes. Dicha institución quedó legalmente fundada en 1628; sin embargo, ésta no pudo iniciar actividades por diversos inconvenientes que se presentaron y fue hasta el año de 1653, cuando el obispo ya había fallecido, que a instancias de los religiosos mercedarios se reanudaron las gestiones para concretar la obra; esta vez se contó con el apoyo del virrey duque de Alburquerque.
