Los gremios en Valladolid de Michoacán durante el siglo XVIII. Una aproximación histórica

Abstract

Despite Michoacán is a region of strong historiographical tradition, the study of the craft corporations has been in the forgetfulness. That’s why the present work has the objective to explore the origin and the way in which the associations guilds were working, since their predecessors the Spanish brotherhoods until the process that took them to became in a guild. Starting from a general approach we will search about the functioning of this professional associations in the New Spain and more precisely in the Valladolid´s city which belonged to Michoacan province, the period of time that will be studied is exactly the XVIII century, this with the finality to know the historic circumstances under the guilds developed their work in the city, taking into account the urban architectonic process that suffered Valladolid in the period we referred. In the text we will try to highlight the similarities and differences that the guilds had in the viceroyalty´s capital with the one who were developing in Valladolid, where they will acquire specific characteristics that would give them an own nuance.

No obstante que Michoacán es una región de fuerte tradición historiográfica, el estudio de las corporaciones artesanales ha permanecido en el olvido. Por ello el trabajo que se presenta a continuación tiene el objetivo de explorar el origen y funcionamiento de las agrupaciones gremiales, desde sus antecesoras las cofradías españolas hasta el proceso que los llevo a la conversión de un gremio. Partiendo desde un planteamiento general indagaremos en el funcionamiento de estas agrupaciones en la Nueva España y más precisamente en la ciudad de Valladolid de Michoacán del siglo XVIII, ello con la finalidad de conocer las circunstancias históricas bajo las que desempeñaron su trabajo los artesanos de la urbe, no dejando fuera el proceso urbano-arquitectónico que sufrió la ciudad en el mencionado periodo. A lo largo del texto trataremos de destacar las similitudes y diferencias que tuvieron los gremios en la capital del virreinato con los que se presentaron en la capital de la provincia michoacana, donde adquirirían una serie de características que les darían un matiz propio.
