La construcción del discurso patriótico-nacionalista en la Nueva España 1521-1794

Abstract

In the present work, the principal arguments about the Creole novohispano patriotism during the colonial era are being analyzed i.e. the appropriation and exaltation of the prehispanic past, the denigration of the Conquest, the Hispanophobia from the Creole and the cult to Our Lady of Guadalupe. Likewise, it is analysed the denigratory discourse from some of the prominent members of the European illustration that disparaged the nature and the men from the New World by putting as a manifest the supposed superiority of Europe and its inhabitants. As well as the overwhelming answer from the Jesuits vanished during the second half of the XVIII century. Finally, its also studied the important role that the Creoles novohispanos from the encyclopedic generation had, who carried out the defense of their homeland by giving great compliments to it and by manifesting the advances of the time in a variety of written media like gazettes and newspapers.

En el presente estudio se analizan los principales argumentos del patriotismo criollo novohispano durante la época colonial, es decir, la apropiación y exaltación del pasado prehispánico, la denigración de la Conquista, la hispanofobia por parte de los criollos y el culto a Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe. De igual forma se examina el discurso denigratorio por parte de algunos miembros prominentes de la Ilustración europea que menospreciaban la naturaleza y a los hombres del Nuevo Mundo, poniendo de manifiesto la supuesta superioridad de Europa y de sus habitantes. Así como la contundente respuesta por parte de los jesuitas expulsos en la segunda mitad del siglo XVIII. Por último se estudia el importante papel de los criollos novohispanos de la generación enciclopédica, quienes también llevaron a cabo la defensa de su patria, realizaron grandes elogios a la misma y además pusieron de manifiesto los avances de la época en diversos medios escritos, como gacetas y periódicos.
