La insurgencia de Pablo Delgado en el Obispado de Michoacán (1810-1818)

Abstract

The historical process of Mexican Independence can be approached from several perspectives. One of them is the regional approach as an implement to observe the characteristics of a phenomenon as big as the novohispanic insurgency in a certain geographical scale. Another is the perspective of social biography that, through the study of a leading character of an historical event, intends to induce the generalities of a process such as the outbreak of the rebellion led by the priests of the low clergy in 1810. The present research project about the bachelor Pablo Delgado uses both tools to bring us a step closer to a better understanding of the Independence. Taking as a methodological framework the social history, which pretends to describe the acts of marginal sectors of a society, this research addresses some profound and immediate roots of the beginning of the insurgency by the priest Miguel Hidalgo and the men who walked beside him. Explaining the role of the bourbon reforms and the consequent regalism that resulted from them, the general context prior the Cry of Dolores is established. Later, the role of the Tierra Caliente in the shaping of the insurgency of the era of Ignacio Rayón and José María Morelos, and the relations, Pablo Delgado, established with them and the insurgent institutions that preceded them, such as the Suprema Junta Nacional Americana and the Congreso de Anáhuac, is set. Finally, the last years of the cause of the priest of Urecho are outlined, immersed in the dynamic of resistance that characterized the second half of the Independence process and finished with his prison. Stated briefly, the life of an insurgent, member of the low clergy of New Spain who, with his actions, lets us see the contrasts of the men who played the lead in our Independence at the beginning of the nineteenth century.

El proceso histórico de la Independencia mexicana puede abordarse desde varias perspectivas. Una de ellas es el enfoque regional como herramienta para observar las características de un fenómeno tan grande como la insurgencia novohispana en una determinada escala geográfica. Otra es la perspectiva de la biografía social que, mediante el estudio de un personaje protagónico de un acontecimiento histórico, pretende inducir las generalidades de un proceso como lo fue la rebelión encabezada por los curas del bajo clero estallada en 1810. El presente trabajo sobre el bachiller Pablo Delgado utiliza ambas herramientas para acercarse a la Independencia. Teniendo como marco metodológico la historia social, cuya pretensión es describir los actos de sectores marginales de una sociedad, esta investigación aborda algunas raíces profundas e inmediatas del inicio de la insurgencia por el cura Miguel Hidalgo y los hombres que lo acompañaron. Explicando el papel de las reformas borbónicas y el consecuente regalismo que de ellas se desprendió, se establece el contexto general previo al grito de Dolores. Posteriormente, se aborda el papel de la Tierra Caliente en la configuración de la insurgencia de la época de Ignacio Rayón y José María Morelos, y las relaciones que Pablo Delgado estableció con ellos y las instituciones insurgentes que precedieron, como la Suprema Junta Nacional Americana y el Congreso de Anáhuac. Finalmente, se esbozan los últimos años de la causa del cura de Urecho, sumido en la dinámica de resistencia que caracterizó a la segunda mitad del proceso independentista y que culminó con su prisión. En síntesis, la vida de un insurgente, integrante del bajo clero novohispano que, con su actuar, nos deja ver los contrastes de los hombres que protagonizaron nuestra Independencia a principios del siglo XIX.
