Proceso electoral, representación y ciudadanía en Puerto Rico durante el Gobierno Provisional español de 1868-1871

Abstract

The nineteenth century represented the arrival of modernity in Spain and its colonies, which in the first 30 years of the nineteenth century were achieving their independence one by one, however, the case of Puerto Rico was different, and although for brief periods it was able to access Modernity is coming in 1869 with the Glorious Revolution, granting the island territory the possibility of once again having representation in the Spanish Cortes. During this period, the positions and interests of the Puerto Rican inhabitants were tenuously outlined, which gave rise to the formation of the first political parties and participation, in the mid of a context tinged with the Old Regime. The electoral process and its results reflect the island situation, which experienced colonial rule for a longer time than other American territories, which strongly clashed with modernity, however, this period was the beginning of great changes on the island in all areas and that in the shadow of the events in the peninsula gave rise to the abolition of slavery, representation to the Cortes, in addition to the formation and strengthening of Puerto Rican civil society.

El siglo XIX representó la llegada de la modernidad a España y sus colonias, que en los primeros 30 años del decimonónico fueron logrando sus independencias una a una, sin embargo, el caso de Puerto Rico fue distinto, y aunque por breves lapsos pudo acceder a la modernidad está llegaría en 1869 con la revolución Gloriosa, otorgándole al territorio isleño la posibilidad de tener de nuevo representación a Cortes españolas. En este periodo se fueron delineando tenuemente las posturas y los intereses de los habitantes puertorriqueños que dieron pie a la formación de los primeros partidos políticos y la participación, en medio de un contexto con tintes de Antiguo Régimen. El proceso electoral y sus resultados son el reflejo de la situación isleña que experimento más tiempo que otros territorios americanos el dominio colonial que chocaba fuertemente contra la modernidad, sin embargo, este periodo fue el inicio de grandes cambios en la isla en todos los ámbitos y que a la sombra de los sucesos en la península dieron como origen la abolición de la esclavitud, representación a Cortes, además de la formación y fortalecimiento de la sociedad civil puertorriqueña.
