La cultura estadounidense y el choque identitario con los mexicanos en Los Ángeles, California en los albores del siglo XX

Abstract

For more than a century, relations between the United States and Mexico have denoted different elements for historiographical production. Through the phenomenon of migration, the interaction between groups of two substantially different cultures generated a bond of coexistence, although this relationship involves both countries, I was aware of the few existing inquiries from the American position on the consequences of Mexican migration. Thus, the objective of this thesis was to address the American perspective regarding Mexicans by highlighting the identity symbolism contained in the nationalist cultural discourses of the United States. Focusing the effort on deepening this relationship in the city of Los Angeles during the first decades of the 20th century, this when the city became the migrant capital as a result of its urban development and consolidated as one of the most important in the United States, as well as the sequel to the Mexican Revolution that caused the arrival of Mexicans. Using specialized bibliographical sources of Anglo authors and hemerography of the context obtained from digital files, I implemented a methodology of discursive dispositions on the sources as stipulated by Roger Chartier, based on the fact that the texts have a historically transmitted symbolic load according to Andrew C. Sparkes and Joseph Davis. During the project, it was found that American culture generated in Los Angeles the conditions to spread its identity values in the face of the growing arrival of Mexicans, responding to idiosyncratic notions that manifested themselves in the marginalization of the migrant sector. In order to conclude that the American worldview is the result of the exacerbation of its tradition as a nation and the reaction to the migratory phenomenon was in accordance with the search to preserve the American national heritage.

Durante más de un siglo las relaciones entre Estados Unidos y México han denotado diferentes elementos para la producción historiográfica. A través del fenómeno de la migración la interacción entre grupos de dos culturas sustancialmente diferentes se generó un vínculo de convivencia, aunque esta relación involucra a ambos países me percate de las pocas indagaciones existentes desde la postura americana sobre las consecuencias de la migración mexicana. Así el objetivo de esta tesis fue abordar la perspectiva estadounidense respecto a los mexicanos a través de resaltar los simbolismos identitarios contenidos en los discursos culturales nacionalistas de Estados Unidos. Centrando el esfuerzo en ahondar dicha relación en la ciudad de Los Ángeles durante las primeras décadas del siglo XX, esto cuando la urbe se convirtió en la capital migrante como consecuencia de su desarrollo urbano y se consolido como una de las más importantes de Estados Unidos, así como la secuela de la Revolución Mexicana que motivo el arribo de mexicanos. Recurriendo a fuentes bibliográficas especializadas de autores anglos y hemerografía del contexto obtenidas de archivos digitales, implemente sobre las fuentes una metodología de las disposiciones discursivas como estipula Roger Chartier en base a que los textos poseen una carga simbólica históricamente transmitida acorde a Andrew C. Sparkes y José Davis. Durante el proyecto se arrojó que la cultura estadounidense generó en Los Ángeles las condicionantes para difundir sus valores identitarios ante el creciente arribo de mexicanos, dando como respuesta nociones idiosincráticas que se manifestaron en la marginación del sector migrante. Para así concluir que la cosmovisión americana es el resultado de la exacerbación de su tradición como nación y la reacción al fenómeno migratorio fue acorde a la búsqueda por preservar la herencia nacional americana.
