El libro-arte en el México del siglo XXI como dispositivo de resistencia social

Abstract

The following research addresses the Book-Art produced in Mexico in the 21st century as social resistance devices. In order to do so, a critical apparatus has been constructed using several paradigms and schools of thought such as philosophy, semiotics, complex thought (complexity sciences), art theory and art history, which by working together offer and exchange information about this particular field, providing a profound knowledge on the subject. The research begins by establishing a definition on Book-Art and its characteristics as well as its precedents and history. At this point the study sets into the Mexican context to explore the arrival and development of Book-Art in the 20th century and its expansion during these past two decades. Once laid the foundations that allow to understand the origin, qualities and growth of this artistic discipline in general as well as in the specific context of Mexico in the 21st century, a relation between these pieces and the concept of social resistance will be built. To achieve this, three main authors are used: Michel Foucault, Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari, whose work is about the tension between the mechanisms that exert power and the practices that confront them. The previous will lead to identify the ways in which Book-Art in Mexico in the present century might insert and participate as part of the discourses that oppose the control system. Lastly, a group of artworks will be analyzed as the specific study cases, taking into consideration their formal, conceptual, discursive and semiotic aspects, in order to determine the different manners in which they function as social resistance devices.

El presente trabajo de investigación propone entender al libro-arte producido en México en el siglo XXI como un dispositivo de resistencia social. Para ello se ha construido un aparato crítico que conjunta paradigmas y corrientes de pensamiento tales como la filosofía, semiótica, pensamiento complejo, teoría e historia del arte, de manera que al arrojar e intercambiar información en torno a un mismo objeto de estudio proporcionan una visión a profundidad del tema. Se inicia estableciendo una definición del libro-arte y expone los rasgos característicos, antecedentes e historia de este género plástico; a partir de este punto su estudio se traslada al contexto mexicano para explorar su llegada y desarrollo en el siglo XX y su expansión en el siglo XXI. Una vez sentadas las bases que permiten comprender el origen, cualidades y crecimiento del libro-arte de manera general y posteriormente en México en el presente siglo se entabla una relación entre estas piezas y el concepto de resistencia. Para ello se manejan los postulados de Michel Foucault, Gilles Deleuze y Félix Guattari, autores que reflexionan en su trabajo acerca del juego de tensiones entre los mecanismos que ejercen el poder y las prácticas que los confrontan; esto permite identificar la manera en que el libro-arte de México en el siglo XXI se inserta y participa en los discursos de oposición al sistema de control. Finalmente se analiza un conjunto de obras que funcionan como los casos específicos de estudio, tomando en cuenta sus aspectos formal, conceptual, discursivo y sígnico, para determinar el modo en que funcionan como dispositivos de resistencia social.
