Trayectorias del jazz en México: músicos, escenarios e identidades en conflicto, 1884-1930

Abstract

With this research, we have tried to contribute to the musical historiography of the country a panorama of jazz within the Mexican territory, highlighting the role those Mexican musicians had in the cultural life of New Orleans and in the creation of hybrid identities during the gestation of one of the most popular consumer products of the first half of the 20th century. It is necessary to highlight that the Mexican and Latin musical veins were present in jazz since before it was conceptualized as such. This presence created an identity and cultural hybridization between Mexico and the United States, emerging throughout the last quarter of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century a series of hybrid dance and musical genres, which through the same Mexican musicians began to interfere in the cultural diet of the country. These genres are directly associated with the prehistory of jazz, including ragtime, cakewalk, foxtrot, and shimmy. With these hybrid genres, also called modern, we were able to corroborate that proto-jazz was present in the national territory during the same period in which it was developed in the United States. For this reason, to say that jazz arrived in Mexico in the 20s of the 20th century is wrong, since what arrived was the concept, but not the sonority, with a load of meanings that were not well accepted by the cultural policies of the country, which resulted in a series of prohibitions and positions against this genre, since in the post-revolutionary nationalist model there was no room for this strident music, which changed when in the thirties, after the whitening of jazz, the meaning of this genre was given new meaning and returned to be part of the tastes of the ruling class.

Con esta investigación se ha pretendido aportar a la historiografía sonora del país un panorama del jazz dentro del territorio mexicano, resaltando el papel que tuvieron los músicos mexicanos en la vida cultural de Nueva Orleans y en la creación de las identidades híbridas durante la gestación de uno de los productos de consumo más populares de la primera mitad del siglo XX; haciendo notar que la vena musical mexicana y latina, estuvieron presentes en el jazz desde antes que este se conceptualizara como tal; dicha presencia creó una identidad e hibridación cultural entre México y los Estados Unidos, surgiendo a lo largo del último cuarto del siglo XIX y principios del XX, una serie de géneros híbridos dancísticos y musicales, que a través de los mismos músicos mexicanos se fueron inmiscuyendo en la dieta cultural del país; dichos géneros se asocian directamente con la prehistoria del jazz, entre los que destacan el ragtime, cakewalk, foxtrot y shimmy. Con estos géneros híbridos, también llamados modernos, pudimos corroborar que el protojazz estuvo presente en territorio nacional durante la misma temporalidad en que se desarrollaba en los Estados Unidos; por lo que decir que el jazz llegó a México en los años 20 del siglo XX, resulta erróneo, pues lo que llegó fue el concepto, mas no la sonoridad, con una carga de significados que no fueron bien aceptados por las políticas culturales del país, lo cual dio como resultado una serie de prohibiciones y posturas contra este género, pues en el modelo nacionalista posrevolucionario no había cabida a esta música estridente, lo cual cambió cuando en los años treinta a partir del blanqueamiento del jazz, el sentido de este género se resignificó y volvió a ser parte de los gustos de la clase dominante.
