Abstract: Targionia hypophylla is thalloid liverwort of the family Targioniaceae (Marchantiopsida), and it is widely distributed around the world. This species has a considerable number of synonyms, as well as being polyploidy and having high suitability. Due to these characteristics of wide distribution around the world, high adaptation and number of synonyms make it a model species to understand the phylogeographic processes in space and time of a cosmopolitan species. The present work aims to know the evolutionary history of Targionia hypophylla to answer the following question: According to the molecular markers of chloroplast rpoC1, trnK-psbA, trnL-F, is there a geographical congruence in the distribution of genetic variation in the populations of T. hypophylla? To answer this question, a representative sampling of the geographical range of T. hypophylla was carried out. Copies were requested from different international herbaria, field trips were made in Mexico and fresh material was requested through Bryonet network. A total of 297 sequences of the chloroplast markers were obtained: rpoC1 (370pb, n = 114), trnL-F (716pb, n = 105) and trnK-psbA (1061pb, n = 78) of the species Targionia hypophylla belonging to 31 populations throughout its distribution. As well as sequences were obtained for the species Targionia elongata (trnL-F= 1, trnKpsbA= 1). To answer our questions, different analyzes were carried out: haplotype spatial networks, population statistics (haplotype, nucleotide, D de Tajima and F de Fu) as well as analysis of molecular variation between bryofloristics regions. There was not loss of genetic connectivity by distance or a phylogeographic structure with the used markers. However, the data suggest that populations of T. hypophylla are recovering from a reduction in their effective population size.
