José Rubén Romero y La Vida Inútil de Pito Pérez, crítica y denuncia social: de la novela al cine de la revolución mexicana

Abstract

José Rubén Romero was a distinguished writer from Michoacán, belonging to the second wave of writers of the Mexican Revolution. The Revolution and the post-revolutionary environment were frequent themes in all his novels. Through his characters he showed the political, social and cultural changes that followed the Mexican Revolution of 1910, allowing the reader to witness how this process impacted the daily life of the Michoacan province. His most famous work La vida inútil de Pito Pérez, published in 1938, revisits the picaresque, a literary subgenre that emerged in the 19th century, characterized by appearing at a time of crisis and aiming to make a profound social criticism. Faithful to the principles of the picaresque, in this work, Romero expresses his discontent with the course the Revolution was taking, the political situation, but in particular the social situation, through Pito Perez, a vagabond and alcoholic, who was never reached by the "social justice" that the armed movement intended. Ruben uses this character to denounce: the failure of the ideals of the Revolution, the persistence of poverty and marginalization, corruption, opportunism and persistent violence. The novel has a rich narrative, an eccentric but sympathetic protagonist and a diversity of characters, which made it very attractive to filmmakers, so it was adapted to the big screen on four occasions, three of the adaptations were filmed during the era of "cine de oro", which like the Novel of the Revolution, was a product of the cultural explosion resulting from the armed movement of 1910.

José Rubén Romero fue un distinguido escritor michoacano, perteneciente a la segunda ola de escritores de la Revolución Mexicana. La Revolución y el ambiente posrevolucionario fueron temas frecuentes en todas sus novelas. Por medio de sus personajes mostró los cambios político sociales y culturales que siguieron a la Revolución Mexicana de 1910, permitiéndole a lector ser testigo de cómo este proceso impactó en la vida cotidiana de la provincia michoacana. Su obra más famosa La vida inútil de Pito Pérez, publicada en 1938, retoma la picaresca, subgénero literario surgido en el siglo XIX, caracterizado por aparecer en un momento de crisis y por tener como objetivo hacer una profunda crítica social. Fiel a los principios de la picaresca, en esta obra, Romero manifiesta su descontento con el rumbo que iba tomando la Revolución, la situación política, pero en particular la situación social, a través de, Pito Pérez un vagabundo y alcohólico, quien nunca fue alcanzado por la “justicia social” que pretendía el movimiento armado. Rubén, utiliza a este personaje para denunciar: el fracaso de los ideales de la Revolución, la persistencia de la pobreza y marginalización, la corrupción, el oportunismo la violencia persistente. La novela, posee riqueza narrativa, un excéntrico, pero simpático protagonista y una diversidad de personajes, que la hicieron muy atractiva para los cineastas, por lo que fue adaptada a la pantalla grande en cuatro ocasiones, tres de las adaptaciones fueron filmadas durante la época del “cine de oro”, que al igual que la Novela de la Revolución, fue producto de la explosión cultural derivada del movimiento armado de 1910.
