Abstract: This is an investigation into the history of a unique garment that constituted the Mexican women's clothing for centuries: the shawl. As a reference of the Mexican female, her shawl has been the subject of inquiry and has also appeared as iconographic element present in plastic centuries of the history of this country to the present day, in narrative genres such as film, literature and poetry mention only his notable presence in the art that seek to reflect "the Mexican." Often symbolized object that is otherwise obscure their materiality. With what materials, what techniques, designs and how-particularly shawls who have produced in this country is something that has little interest to the history of textiles. Incidentally, this ignorance is shared with many other tissues, as has been most striking use that factory, so we say that the history of Mexican textile has many chapters yet to be written. The symbolic value of this clothing in relation to its sparse production this led us to want to investigate his past; its origins, its production sites over time, its obvious similarities with similar garments elsewhere, its continued representation are matters that captured our interest in building a story that does not concentrate only on usage, but mainly in the production and circulation of the shawl. The main objective has been to argue that the coating is the largest textile object identity in Mexican women's clothing, its production flexibility and the many commercial schemes in which were inserted the roots of the above. We talk about identity in the sense that you can clearly distinguish their presence along a continuum of time in large segments of the population.
