La música en los orígenes de la catedral de Pátzcuaro-Valladolid, 1540-1631

Abstract

The music's historiography in the cathedrals novohispanas, except for few exceptions, it has been centered mainly in the musical chapel, in the chapel teachers and in the musical works and their composers. The study that next present he/she registers inside a long term task that will consist on the music's study in the cathedral of the diocese of Michoacán during the viceregal period. He/she responds to an intent to understand a wider panorama of the musical practices in a concrete cathedral, that of Michoacán, seated first in Pátzcuaro and later in Valladolid, taking into account their experience and specific realities, and escaping from some generalizations that have also dominated to the musical historiography on cathedrals novohispanas. From the realization of my degree thesis I realized the necessity not to consider to the cathedral like an isolated institution of their urban environment, as well as of finding the interaction points between the cathedral and other religious existent institutions in the Episcopal city. 1 somehow in this work it was present also this concern, although it was centered in the cathedral institution, because it was also imperative in this occasion to go back to the study of the earliest stage in the cathedral to know the way in that the personnel related with the music was structured in the origins of this institution and the concrete functions that each one of them carried out. Hence, besides considering to the cathedral it inserts in their urban plot in the different cities in those that settled, it was necessary to take a look toward inside the institution, defining each one of the ministries or occupations that had relationship with the music and to clarify their functions.

La historiografía de la música en las catedrales novohispanas, salvo pocas excepciones, se ha centrado sobre todo en la capilla musical, en los maestros de capilla y en las obras musicales y sus compositores. El estudio que a continuación presento se inscribe dentro de una tarea a largo plazo que consistirá en el estudio de la música en la catedral de la diócesis de Michoacán durante el periodo virreinal. Responde a un intento por comprender un panorama más amplio de las prácticas musicales en una catedral concreta, la de Michoacán, asentada primero en Pátzcuaro y más tarde en Valladolid, tomando en cuenta su experiencia y realidades específicas, y huyendo de algunas generalizaciones que han dominado también a la historiografía musical sobre catedrales novohispanas. Desde la realización de mi tesis de licenciatura me di cuenta de la necesidad de no considerar a la catedral como una institución aislada de su entorno urbano, así como de encontrar los puntos de interacción entre la catedral y otras instituciones religiosas existentes en la ciudad episcopal. 1 De alguna manera en este trabajo estuvo presente también esta preocupación, aunque se centró en la institución catedralicia, pues era también imperativo en esta ocasión remontarme al estudio de la etapa más temprana de la catedral para conocer la manera en que se estructuró el personal relacionado con la música en los orígenes de esta institución y las funciones concretas que cada uno de ellos realizaba. Por ello, además de considerar a la catedral inserta en su trama urbana en las diferentes ciudades en las que se asentó, resultó necesario echar una mirada hacia dentro de la institución, definiendo cada uno de los ministerios u oficios que tenían relación con la música y clarificar sus funciones.
