Los inicios de la historiografía moderna en Chile, 1844-1850

Abstract

This paper studies the beginnings of modern historiography in Chile, an event that we have located temporarily in the middle of the 19th century, specifically between 1844 and 1850. We are located within this time frame since it was in this decade when investigations began to be developed in Chile historically in a systematic way over time. We emphasize that, in this process, the institutional framework provided by the University of Chile (founded in 1843) and the impulse that the nineteenth-century Chilean State lent to the development of historical-naturalist research since the previous decade played a fundamental role for the consolidation of a modern historiography in the country. However, we maintain that those were not the only factors that determined the beginnings of modern research in Chilean history because this stage of national historiographic development was framed within a broader process which was characterized, fundamentally, by the configuration of a historiography of a scientific nature which affected the entire historiographical panorama of the 19th century both in Chile and outside the country. For this last reason, the reader will find a work that is not confined only in the study of the most important historical works emerged in the mid-nineteenth century in Chile, but also, with a panorama of the historical thought of men of that time, as well as the ideas of scientific knowledge and objective knowledge (ideas from the field of natural sciences) that influenced the scientific research of the past.

El presente trabajo estudia los inicios de la historiografía moderna en Chile, acontecimiento que hemos ubicado temporalmente a mediados del silo XIX, específicamente entre 1844 y 1850. Nos ubicamos dentro de este marco temporal ya que fue en esta década cuando comenzaron a desarrollarse en Chile investigaciones históricas de manera sistemática a lo largo del tiempo. Destacamos que, en este proceso, el marco institucional prestado por la Universidad de Chile (fundada en 1843) y el impulso que el propio Estado chileno decimonónico prestó para el desarrollo de investigaciones histórico-naturalistas desde la década anterior jugaron un rol fundamental para la consolidación de una historiografía moderna en el país. Sin embargo, sostenemos que aquellos no fueron los únicos factores que determinaron los inicios de la investigación moderna de la historia en Chile porque esta etapa del desarrollo historiográfico nacional se enmarcó dentro de un proceso más amplio el cual se caracterizó, fundamentalmente, por la configuración de una historiografía de carácter científico lo cual afectó todo el panorama historiográfico del siglo XIX tanto en Chile como fuera del país. Por este último motivo, el lector se encontrará con un trabajo que no se recluye solamente en el estudio de las obras históricas más importantes surgidas a mediados del siglo XIX en Chile, sino también, con un panorama del pensamiento histórico de los hombres de ese tiempo, así como de las ideas de cientificidad y de conocimiento objetivo (ideas provenientes desde el ámbito de las ciencias naturales) que influyeron sobre la investigación científica del pasado.
