Abstract

The current doctoral thesis The Masonry of the Cathedral of Santo Domingo, Primary of America. His 20 Years of Construction, from 1521 to 1541, consists of the analysis and study of the influences, knowledge and technical-constructive processes that were implemented in the construction of the Cathedral of Santo Domingo. Also, it resources on the possible interventions of the external constructors and local (european and the natives, reviewing with the role of the slaves) and the contributions that could offer in the new architectonic solutions that arise from it. This research is located in the first half of sixteenths century, moment at which the first cathedral of America is constructed, the Cathedral of Santo Domingo. Therefore, it is through the masonry of the Cathedral that their constructors express the heap like materials, knowledge and techniques that were known in the precise historical moment; also it’s expresses all problematic social, economic and the nature of the place. Starting with these subjects it’s made this research that considers the study of other values that comprise substantive part of the architecture, as it the case of historical technology. The methodology was simple and flexible, establishing comparisons and references with the context and the construction, consequently that it allowed to collect and to keep all necessary information during the research is in process. This methodology is based on three aspects: first, the obtaining and summary of data; second, the depuration and analysis of the different sources, intrinsic as extrinsic from the building; and finally developing the conclusions through the summarize some of the specific valuations raised in the research. As a result from this process of analysis and interpretation we chose to divide the base of the thesis in four theoretical parts that it sustains to the research and a last part that contains the conclusions at that we arrived.

La presente tesis doctoral Obra de fábrica de la Catedral de Santo Domingo, Primada de América. Sus 20 años de construcción, desde 1521 a 1541 consiste en el análisis y estudio de las influencias, conocimientos y procesos técnicos-constructivos que se implementaron en la construcción de la Catedral de Santo Domingo. Así mismo, trata sobre las posibles intervenciones de los constructores tanto externos como locales (los europeos y los indígenas, revisando el aporte de los esclavos negros) y las aportaciones que pudieron ofrecer en las nuevas soluciones arquitectónicas que surgen en ella. Esta investigación se ubica en la primera mitad del siglo XVI, momento en que se construye la primera catedral de América, la Catedral de Santo Domingo. Por lo tanto, es a través de la obra de fábrica de la Catedral que sus constructores expresan el acervo en cuanto a materiales, conocimientos y técnicas que conocían en ese momento histórico; además de expresar toda la problemática social, económica y natural del lugar. Partiendo de estos temas se realizó esta investigación que considera importante el estudio de otros valores que forman parte sustantiva de la arquitectura, como es el caso de la tecnología histórica. La metodología de trabajo fue sencilla y flexible, estableciendo comparaciones y referencias con el contexto y la edificación, de manera que permitió recoger y guardar toda la información necesaria y adquirida durante las investigaciones. Se basó en tres aspectos: primero, la obtención y recopilación de datos; segundo, la depuración y análisis de las diferentes fuentes, tanto intrínsecas como extrínsecas al edificio; y por último desarrollando las conclusiones mediante las cuales se concretaron algunas de las valoraciones planteadas en la investigación. Como resultado de este proceso de análisis e interpretación se optó por dividir el contenido de la tesis en cuatro partes teóricas que sustentan la investigación y una última parte que contiene las conclusiones a que llegamos.
