Una región en transición a la modernización. La Araucanía (Chile ), 1883-1930

Abstract

During the spring of 1884, shortly after the end of the last bullets, sablazos and skirmishes of the "pacification" war undertaken by the Chilean state against the Indians, prominent Polish intellectual and scientist Ignacio Domeyko, who in 1845 had Published the classic work about the Mapuche Araucania and its inhabitants, wrote astonished that "in the same fields that 40 years ago lay vacant, where a wild man ran, I now saw extensive fields of grain, from time to time vineyards, railways, Stations with weeping buildings filled with sacks of wheat and packages with goods with English texts, telegraph lines and new settlements ... ". With great admiration, the wise Domeyko portrays in this way a fundamental aspect of the transformations sponsored and oriented by the Chilean state, that during the last decades of the nineteenth century and the first of the twenty they impacted in the old mapuche territory or Gullumapu. As a result of the transformations that were beginning to take place in the region in various areas, especially around the constitution of the property of a territory in colonization, it is notorious the level of collapse to which the social relations were forced due to the actions of usurpation , Frauds and illegalities around indigenous and fiscal lands, an important issue that occupies the ministerial and official reports, in addition to the sources of the time.

Durante la primavera de 1884, poco tiempo después del fin de las últimas balas, sablazos y escaramuzas de la guerra de “pacificación” que emprendió el estado chileno en contra de los indígenas, el destacado intelectual y científico polaco Ignacio Domeyko, quién en 1845 había publicado la clásica obra acerca de los mapuche Araucanía y sus habitantes, escribía asombrado que “en los mismos campos que hace 40 años yacían vacíos, por donde corría un hombre salvaje, ahora vi extensos sembrados de cereales, de vez en cuando viñas, ferrocarriles, estaciones con edificios de ladillos llenos de sacos de trigo y bultos con mercancías con textos en inglés, líneas telegráficas y nuevos poblados...”. Con gran admiración, el sabio Domeyko retrata de esta manera un aspecto fundamental de las transformaciones auspiciadas y orientadas por el estado chileno, que durante las últimas décadas del siglo diecinueve y las primeras del veinte impactaron en el antiguo territorio mapuche o Gullumapu. Producto de las transformaciones que se comenzaban a dar en la región en diversos ámbitos, especialmente en torno a la constitución de la propiedad de un territorio en colonización, es notorio el nivel de colapso al que se forzaban las relaciones sociales debido a las acciones de usurpación, fraudes e ilegalidades en torno a los terrenos indígenas y fiscales, cuestión que ocupa de manera importante los informes ministeriales y de los funcionarios, además de las fuentes de la época.
