Resumen : Diabetes mellitus (DM) is described as a metabolic disorder of multiple etiologies characterized by chronic hyperglycemia, resulting from defects in the secretion or action of insulin, or both, which leads to abnormalities in the metabolism of carbohydrates, lipids and proteins and an increase in oxidative stress, which leads to the development of its complications and the deterioration of various organs, including the lungs, causing pulmonary insufficiency, which aggravates the diabetic condition. The incidence of DM grows rapidly, which increases the need to find new treatment alternatives more effective and safe than those found on the market today. An alternative is the use of medicinal plants as treatment because there are several studies carried out on plants that show a therapeutic effect for different conditions. Potentilla indica (P. indica), commonly known as "strawberry from India", has been used in traditional medicine in Asia for the treatment of leprosy, inflammation, hypoglycaemia, antioxidant and anticancer. Therefore, it was of interest to evaluate the effect of the consumption of the methanolic extract of the P. indica fruit. This work suggests that the fruit of P. indica presents antioxidant activity and that it can reduce the complications of DM caused in the lungs. To verify this, the effect of consumption of the methanolic extract of the fruit of P. indica in diabetic rats was evaluated when administered orally (VO) and nasally (VN) at a concentration of 25mg / kg of weight for 30 days. The content of phenolic acids and flavonoids was quantified and the antioxidant effect was evaluated in vitro. At the end of the treatment, the rats were sacrificed, the blood was collected for the quantification of the levels of glucose, lipids (cholesterol and triacylglycerides) and to determine the levels of lipoperoxidation in serum and the lung mitochondria were obtained to evaluate the activity of the complexes.
