Abstract: The aim of this study was to analyze the surfaces wich have more contact with the patients and the dentists in the clinic of orthodontics at the Michoacana University (Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolas de Hidalgo), to determine what type of pathogenic organisms were found in those surfaces at different times to know if the cross-infection control protocol installed was correct Samples were taken as follows: from the dental unit´s lamp, the surface of the triple syringe and the water coming from it, the area of sterilization and packaging and the surface of common use blasters in the clinic were sampled as well, at different times interspersed between patient care and cleaning also randomly in different dental units. All samples were performed with sterile swabs and deposited in a conveyance of thioglycolate. The samples were received and processed at the Microbiology Service of the General Hospital “Dr. Miguel Silva” in Morelia, where they were planted on three culture media: blood agar base, MacConkey agar and salt mannitol agar. Samples were incubated during 24 hours for further comprehensive analysis, carrying out the following tests: Gram stain, cuagulase, catalase, DNase and bacteriological identification test by VYTEK. After obtaining the results it was found that 83.33 % of the seventy eight samples analyzed contained microbial contaminants, 100% of the samples obtained from the surface of lamp were found contaminated, the surface with less contaminated samples was the area sterilization and packaging (6 %).
