Abstract: The aim of the investigation was to submit a steel AISI 4140 a process of nitriding plasma method, characterizing the structure, phases present and analyze their effect on mechanical properties. To study the effects caused by the plasma nitriding, the samples were nitrided nitriding time varying the values from 3 to 6 hours, in a temperature range from 412-550 °C, and mixture of H2 -N2- Ar gas variable. For Ar was 15-88 %, 10-84 % H2 and N2 was finally for from 1hasta10 %. The structure of the nitrided layer was analyzed by optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Micro hardness measurements were performed to determine the correlations of micro hardness vs. layer depth reached, tribology and wear tests were performed using the technique of pin -on- disc. The results of the microstructural characterization showed that nitriding times of 6 hours and 550 0C a compact and homogeneous layer thickness was formed , which had the highest value of micro hardness (Hv 744 ) with a thickness of about 6 microns formed by small crystals of Fe2 -3N nitrides and γ '- Fe4N , those which were identified by X-ray diffraction. The results of the analysis of energy dispersive spectroscopy showed a profile of decreased concentration of N, from the surface to the center of the material, causing a decrease in micro hardness of the material inwards .Tribology results showed an increase in wear resistance compared to nitrided steels, arrival.
