Abstract: In the present work the effect of low intensity electromagnetic interaction (LIEI) was investigated by applying external magnetic fields perpendicular to the electric arc and opposite each other on the joint in two passes of bevel in double "V" at 30 ° without root bead in API 5L X-70 steel by means of the gas metal arc welding process (GMAW), with greater emphasis on welding bead and thermally affected area (HAZ), the electromagnetic intensity (EI) was between 0 and 3.5 mT, comparing the results of mechanical and metallographic tests with conventional welding without magnetic field (MF) and metallographic welding with the factory welding by the submerged arc welding process (SAW). Uniaxial tension, microhardness and Charpy impact tests were performed to evaluate the mechanical properties of the welded joints. The microstructure of the specimens was studied by optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The microstructural observations showed that the microstructure of the weld seams, with magnetic field, is constituted by acicular ferrite (AF) and grain limit (proeutectoid). The values of tensile strength, yield stress and elongation percentage for welding with MF increased by 17.38, 13 and 43% over conventional welding, in such a way that it meets the minimum values established by the standard. Welding with MF showed less variation in microhardness measurements in the lower cord because the grain size of the microstructure is smaller than the other specimens. Likewise, the assay stress fractographies of the MF welding presented a ductile type fracture, similarly the base material and the joint without field.
