Abstract: The objective of this investigation was to document the knowledge that locals of the municipality of Carácuaro, Michoacán, have kept about the native stingless bees of the Meliponini tribe and the interactions they perform with these, taxonomically identify the stingless native bees present, as well how to document the diversity and current distribution of stingless bees in the municipality. A structured survey was applied to 41 cattle producers in the municipality of Carácuaro, whose replies led to the location of 55 wild stingless bees nest, that were georeferenced with a Global Positioning System (GPS) and samples were obtained by testing a new collection method, which consisted of using a cosmetic brush directly from the entries of the nests, obtaining between 2 and 6 bees of each one, they were introduced in a wide mouth container with lethal solution of alcohol to 70%; subsequently, four specimens of each nest were assembled, using the double mounting method on entomological pins, to facilitate their taxonomic identification by comparison with the respective keys. 13 localities of the municipality were sampled, identifying the following 4 species of stingless bees: Scaptotrigona hellwegeri, Geotrigona acapulconis, which builds their nests underground; Lestrimelitta chamelensis, known for its cleptobiotic behavior to other species of meliponinos and Frieseomelitta nigra, species with a broade presence in the region. In the municipality of Carácuaro, there is no such evidence of raising stingless bees, on the opposite, unsustainable extractive practices are described that in some cases, date from the middle of the last century, practices that have contributed to the diminishing of these important species in the region. This research generated reference data in the study of stingless bees, as well as being a complement to apifaunistic studies of the state of Michoacán.
