Abstract: To evaluate the seismic hazard of a site or to estimate the vulnerability of a structure or group of structures, it is necessary to determine the seismic demand. Demand depends primarily on the geology of the site, the seismicity of the region and the dynamic characteristics of the soil. This paper aims to provide the necessary foundations for spectral seismic demand in areas of high seismicity as exist in our country. To meet this objective a set of accelerograms recorded in Mexico and the maximum values expected ground accelerations for different return periods, based on which the claims are evaluated in seismic structures are used. These maximum spectral accelerations are linked with structural inelastic response by presenting ductility structures. The maximum values expected ground accelerations, to which reference will also be obtained from a previous study conducted by the appointed at the end of this work (Jara, 2007) reference. In the early chapters the history and characteristics of the seismicity in Mexico are given. Later catalogs tremors in Mexico are analyzed and finally spectral values of the selected set of accelerograms are calculated and the expected average values. Estimations spectral seismic demand levels experienced structures at a site focusing on obtaining maximum values of expected response. This is accomplished by calculating spectra of elastic and inelastic response, Fourier amplitude spectra and determining the transfer functions between rigid and soft soils. The process of obtaining these values is described in Chapter 3. The preparation and description of the interesting facts that can be deducted is detailed in Chapter 5, and their use to obtain these levels of seismic demand.
