Actualmente la vivienda sigue siendo una necesidad primordial del ser humano. En México es muy común que la construcción de casas habitación se haga de manera empírica sin un pleno conocimiento de las acciones que actuarán sobre estas y la respuesta de éstas siempre será incierta. De esto surge el diseño estructural, mediante el cual se analizan y determinan las dimensiones de los elementos de una casa para que estos sean los adecuados para dar seguridad y que a su vez sean económicos. El diseño estructural es el proceso mediante el cual se establecen las características de la estructura, que garanticen un comportamiento satisfactorio. El diseño estructural comprende varios aspectos que se deben cumplir pasa satisfacer las solicitaciones como; forma, uso de la estructura, materiales, mano de obra especializada, costos y fundamentalmente los reglamentos. Se puede conocer el comportamiento de una estructura mediante los elementos mecánicos que serán las fuerzas internas y deberán ser capaces de resistir las fuerzas externas. Cuando esto no se cumple, deberán cambiarse las dimensiones o el material y analizar nuevamente la estructura. Para realizar el análisis de la estructura se deben tener bien definidos los parámetros y restricciones que deberá cumplir la estructura, que garanticen el adecuado funcionamiento de esta y estén dentro de los estados límite de servicio y de falla.
