Abstract: This Thesis presents a general model for the optimization of a thermo-electrical power plant for a sustainable generation of electricity, which takes as a basis economic and environmental considerations. It should be noticed that nowadays the high energy consumption is one of the main problems because most of the energy is obtained through the burn of fossil fuels. In Mexico, there are around 180 power plants, almost half of them are thermo-electrical units that use mostly natural gas as burning agents in the corresponding boiler. This type of power plants is the most economic because it is the one that produces the highest profit, but it also emits most of the harmful atmospheric contaminants and greenhouse gases in comparison with info:eu-repo/semantics/other industrial sectors. In this work, it is proposed a scheme that allows considering the interaction between all of the process variables on the power plant in order to get a mathematical model that allows satisfying limits for the greenhouse gas emissions whereas the net profit is maximized. The proposed optimization formulation is based on the use of genetic algorithms linked to the software Aspen Plus®, Matlab® and Visual Basic®.
