Abstract: Weldings in carbon steels are present in almost any industrial application, however the resulting morphology in the grain growth zone close to the fusion line, is susceptible to present some defects or affectations in the property of its morphology, getting as a result mechanical failure. Within the current thesis, the microstructural changes when applying external magnetic fields during a low carbon content steel (it’s a case of API X52 5L steel) joined by the SAW process are analyzed, as well as the resulting changes in the microhardness behavior of the weld bead. The obtained results show the effect that the application of the magnetic fields had on the weld metal, which occur in the heat affected zone (HAZ), because the restriction of the growth of the grain in this area was very noticeable. Furthermore, the modifications on the mechanical behaviour in the zone of the joint due to the electromagnetic interaction during the welding process is also revealed. The characterization by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that the growth grain zone (GGZ) suffered modifications in the expected structure retained austenite and its width. The microhardness profiles demonstrate that the welding without a magnetic field (NMF) and the welding with a magnetic field (WMF) in the different characterized zones, throw very homogeneous values.
