Resumen : Phosphorus recycling and dry matter partitioning are crucial to improve internal P utilization and regulate zinc (Zn) and iron (Fe) bioavailability in maize under P limiting conditions. Phytate is considered as an anti-nutritional factor present in cereals and bind to cationic minerals including iron (Fe) and zinc (Zn), thus reducing their bioavailability. This study evaluated the patterns of P remobilization and dry matter partitioning, and their relationchip with P utilization efficiency (PUTE) and the accumulation of phytate, Zn and Fe. Six maize genotypes were grown on a P-deficient soil, with limited (25 kg P2O5 ha-1) and optimal (50 kg kg P2O5 ha-1) P inputs. The proportions of dry matter and P partitioned into various plant tissues were unchanged by P application level. Under P deficiency soil, both biomass allocation and P accumulation in the grain were important components for explaining the variation on PUTE. Greater PUTE was linked to an enhanced partitioning of biomass in the plants and a lower acquired P allocated in the seed. Under P limiting environments, late maturing genotypes showed the greatest amount of biomass produced per unit of absorbed P and a better remobilization of absorbed P to active plant tissue (shoot and root). In contrast, early maturing genotypes had much lower P uptake, higher P remobilization to grain, and similar utilization efficiency at both P levels. Regardless of P aplication rate, dry matter and P remobilization to the grain was higher in early maturing genotypes (29 y 31 %) than in late ones (18 y 6 %).
