Un museo es una institución de carácter permanente y no lucrativo al servicio de la sociedad y su desarrollo, abierta al público que exhibe, conserva, investiga, comunica y adquiere, con fines de estudio, educación y disfrute, la evidencia material de la gente y su medio ambiente.
