This thesis aims to review the application of the formalism of amplitude equations to the study of instabilities that occur in the double diffusive isothermal system. Specifically: (A) It explains how the amplitude equations are derived along the stationary and oscillatory branch using the multi-time perturbation theory. (B) Based on these equations, an analysis of the different phenomena that this system presents. It is shown the existence of a tricritic point (PTC) in the stationary branch that is sufficiently separated from the point of codimension-2 (PC2) which would make accessible the experimental study of the dynamics of the system near these points. (C) The phenomenon of hysteresis that appears in the stationary branch is explained. (D) It is shown that the amplitude equations in the oscillatory branch predict that the traveling waves exist only in the branch itself, indicating the necessity of a fifth order calculation, with which it would be possible to predict the stability of the traveling waves. (E) The behavior of the system around PC2 is outlined.
