The differential equations and mathematical modeling numerical methods form the deep infrastructure of science and engineering. This fact sometimes forgotten, emerged from the eclectic activities Newton and Leibnitz, discoverers of Differential and Integral Calculus. At its beginning, the pioneers did not visualize any separation between mathematics and physics, or between applications and science. This dual tradition of considering the unit in continuous-discrete, finite, infinite, penetrated for centuries in the work of Euler, Lagrange, Laplace, Gauss, Cauchy, Tchebycheff, Galerkin, Courant-numeric symbol and many others. Something similar happened in mathematics incipient Iberoamericana. The craving for absolute rigor, which appeared in Europe in the nineteenth century, completely separating the two aspects of modeling. On one side are the purist’s abstract symbolism, in another distant part, the mechanics of the algorithm, the number, and the calculators. The exponential use of electronic computing, from the 1940s, merely accelerate divorce. Today, this is evident not only in the way we teach separate calculation and numerical methods, but also in professional work. In Mexico, the vast majority of people applying mathematics to tangible phenomena are engineers, economists, physicists, chemists. Mathematical professionals rarely involved. In college this translates into a serious conflict: why include numerical praxis in the mathematics curriculum, why use mathematical applications and modeling? Those who work in these areas know that the dilemma is false. The search for a better understanding of nature was the driving force of scientific and technological development in the history of mankind.
Las ecuaciones diferenciales, el modelado matemático y los métodos numéricos forman la infraestructura profunda de las ciencias y de las ingenierías. Este hecho, a veces olvidado, surgió de las eclécticas actividades de Newton y Leibnitz, descubridores del Calculo Diferencial e Integral. En su principio, los pioneros no visualizaron ninguna separación entre matemática y física, ni entre las aplicaciones y la ciencia. Esa tradición dual de considerar la unidad en lo simbólico-numérico, continuo-discreto, finito infinito, penetro durante siglos en los trabajos de Euler, Lagrange, Laplace, Gauss, Cauchy, Tchebycheff, Galerkin, Courant y muchos otros más. Algo similar ocurrió en la incipiente matemática Iberoamericana. El ansia por el rigor absoluto, que surge en Europa en el siglo XIX, separa completamente ambos aspectos del modelado. En una parte quedan los puristas del simbolismo abstracto, en otra lejana parte, los mecánicos del algoritmo, los numéricos, los calculistas. El uso exponencial del cómputo electrónico, a partir de la década de 1940, no hace sino acelerar el divorcio. Hoy, esto es evidente no solo en la forma separada en que enseñamos el cálculo y los métodos numéricos, sino también en el trabajo profesional. En México, la gran mayoría de la gente que aplica las matemáticas a fenómenos tangibles son ingenieros, economistas, físicos, químicos. Los matemáticos profesionales participan rara vez. En la educación universitaria esto se traduce en un serio conflicto: ¿para qué incluir la praxis numérica en el curriculum matemático?, ¿por qué usar matemáticas en aplicaciones y modelación? Quienes trabajamos en estas áreas sabemos que el dilema es falso. La búsqueda de una mejor comprensión de la naturaleza fue la fuerza conductora del desarrollo científico y tecnológico en toda la historia de la humanidad.
