Gonzalo Guerrero: El conquistador conquistado una historia invisible de la conquista

Abstract

Gonzalo Guerrero has been a character forgotten by historiography, despite having played a fundamental role as the first Spaniard who carried out in his person, his family, his descendants and his actions, the first cultural amalgamation between Spain and Mesoamerica. . Not only did he give his name to the first Mesoamerican mestizos, but he tried to understand their customs and traditions to such a degree that when the dilemma of going with Cortés to what would be the Conquest of Tenochtitlán or remaining with the people that had adopted him He preferred the latter. He had identified so much with that culture that he became the first European ally of the Mayan peoples, he participated in the organization that delayed and hindered the first attempts at Spanish conquest and colonization in the region. It is important to work on this issue, because Gonzalo Guerrero is the first European (along with his other shipwrecked companions) to touch Mesoamerican land ten years before the Conquest of Mexico and six before the first Spanish expedition to the peninsula in 1517, reaching a new and more complex world than the one known until then in the Caribbean islands.

Gonzalo Guerrero ha sido un personaje olvidado por la historiografía, a pesar de haber desempeñado un papel fundamental como el primer español que llevó a cabo en su persona, su familia, en su descendencia y en sus acciones, la primera amalgama cultural entre España y Mesoamérica. No sólo le dio su nombre a los primeros mestizos mesoamericanos, sino que intentó comprender sus costumbres y tradiciones a tal grado, que al presentarse la disyuntiva de irse con Cortés a lo que sería la Conquista de Tenochtitlán o permanecer con el pueblo que lo había adoptado, prefirió esto último. Se había identificado tanto con esa cultura, que se convirtió en el primer aliado europeo de los pueblos mayas, participó en la organización que retrasó y obstaculizó las primeras pretensiones de conquista y colonización española en la región. Es importante trabajar este tema, porque Gonzalo Guerrero es el primer europeo (junto con sus otros compañeros de naufragio) en tocar tierras mesoamericanas diez años antes de la Conquista de México y seis antes de la primera expedición española a la península en 1517, llegando a un mundo nuevo y más complejo que el que se conocía hasta entonces en las islas caribeñas.
