Throughout the colonial era, the main social role assigned to women consisted of the reproduction and upbringing of children, as well as the care of the family and the home. The convents were one of the institutions in charge of the education of Spanish girls, and of some castes, since they offered them the teaching accepted by the society of that time, basically consisting of promoting the learning of patterns that stimulated feminine virtues such as: obedience, religious devotion, discretion, but above all, purity, expressed through virginity. The foregoing allowed the reproduction of an ideal of women, precisely, supported and encouraged by the Hispanic colonial institutions, among which the convent stands out, which, in addition, was very useful for society and especially for families who in many Sometimes they were more interested in the foundation and maintenance of the convents, the ecclesiastical government was also interested in offering young women not only the education recognized during this historical period, but also in taking care of the young women from the most powerful groups in New Spain society. the Creoles and Spaniards, as they were known during this time, or rather, the indigenous caciques or nobles. Being few life alternatives for women belonging to the oligarchy, they were basically divided into two: marriage or entering the convent.
Durante toda la época colonial, el principal rol social asignado a las mujeres consistió en la reproducción y crianza de los hijos, así como el cuidado de la familia y la casa. Los conventos fueron una de las instituciones encargados de la educación de las niñas españolas, y de algunas castas ya que les brindaban la enseñanza aceptada por la sociedad de esa época, consistente básicamente, en promover el aprendizaje de patrones que estimulaban las virtudes femeninas como: la obediencia, la devoción religiosa, la discreción, pero sobre todo, la pureza, expresada a través de la virginidad. Lo anterior permitió la reproducción de un ideal de mujer, precisamente, sostenido y alentado por las instituciones coloniales hispanas, entre las que destacan el convento, el cual, además, resultaba de gran utilidad para la sociedad y sobre todo a las familias quienes en muchas ocasiones eran más interesadas en la fundación y mantenimiento de los conventos, también el gobierno eclesiástico se interesaba en ofrecer a las jóvenes no sólo la educación reconocida durante éste período histórico, sino por ocuparse de las jóvenes de los grupos más poderosos de la sociedad novohispana, las criollas y españolas, como eran conocidas durante este tiempo, ó bien, las caciques ó nobles indígenas. Siendo pocas las alternativas de vida de las mujeres pertenecientes a la oligarquía, éstas se dividieron fundamentalmente en dos: el matrimonio ó ingresar al convento.
