La lucha por el voto femenino, Los Derechos Políticos de la mujer en México 1934-1958

Abstract

Since ancient times, women have been relegated in almost all areas of social life, even in the closest affective circles. Slave-holding civilizations like the Greek and Roman were unaware of the rights of women, slaves and children. It was several centuries later that these discriminated groups began to earn a place in the laws of the countries, as a consequence of the French Revolution; however, the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen does not specify the situation of women. By the 19th century, universal suffrage was understood only as the right to vote for men, who were considered based on criteria that gave great value to property, and totally excluding women. It is in relation to this problem that the present study is built, analyzing the causes and consequences of this phenomenon. It was not until the 20th century that in Mexico women managed to assert their rights by gaining a place in society, to be able to aspire to a better way of life and not because men have given them the opportunity, but because they have managed to be considered that both are human beings with the same opportunities and rights to participate in the various spheres of social life. One of the great achievements in this sense is the triumph of the fight for the vote and the possibility of exercising it and being able to compete for any public office. But all this was possible thanks to the fact that women created organizations to seek that their voice was heard, reasoned and taken into account to elaborate democratic legislation and thus meet their demands.

Desde la antigüedad la mujer ha sido relegada en casi todos los ámbitos de la vida social, aun en los círculos afectivos más cercanos. Civilizaciones esclavistas como la griega y la romana desconocían los derechos de mujeres, esclavos y niños. Fue varios siglos después que estos grupos discriminados empezaron a ganarse un lugar en las legislaciones de los países, como consecuencia de la Revolución Francesa; sin embargo, en la Declaración de los Derechos del Hombre y del Ciudadano no se especifica la situación de la mujer. Para el siglo XIX se entendía por sufragio universal únicamente el derecho al voto de los hombres, los cuales eran considerados a partir de criterios que daban un gran valor a la propiedad, y excluyendo totalmente a las mujeres. Es en relación con esta problemática que está construido el presente estudio, analizando las causas y consecuencias de este fenómeno. Fue hasta el siglo XX que en México las mujeres lograron hacer valer sus derechos al ganar un lugar en la sociedad, para poder aspirar a una mejor forma de vida y no porque los hombres le hayan dado la oportunidad, sino porque han logrado que se considere que los dos son seres humanos con las mismas oportunidades y derechos de participar en los diversos ámbitos de la vida social. Uno de los grandes logros en este sentido es el triunfo de la lucha por el voto y la posibilidad de ejercerlo y poder competir por cualquier cargo público. Pero todo esto fue posible gracias a que las mujeres crearon organizaciones para buscar que su voz fuera escuchada, razonada y tomada en cuenta para elaborar una legislación democrática y así cumplir sus demandas.
