In the last third of the 19th century, capitalism began a new stage of its development and the financial bourgeoisie took a decisive presence to direct the destinies of the world. During this period, a series of contradictions emerged in Mexican society. Foreign investment reached various economic sectors; the monopolies grew easily and quickly through the removal of raw materials and the over-exploitation of Mexican labor. Thus, a Mexican agricultural and commercial sector took advantage of the situation created and positioned itself alongside foreign capital to take advantage and also enrich itself. The seriousness of the matter was that the social wealth generated was distributed in such a way that much of it remained in a few national and foreign hands, leaving the majority of the population living in extreme poverty. Over the years, the land concentration process resulted in huge tracts remaining uncultivated; the land concentration policy was based on violence affecting large rural populations.
