San Nicolás Obispo catholic boarding school was founded in San Luis Potosi with money inherited from a rich merchant and livestock farmer called Don Nicolas Fernando de Torres, who died at the end of the XVII century. The school however did not start activities until the half of the next century. Michoacán’s Bishop, Pedro Anselmo Sánchez de Tagle accelerated the project and drafted its constitutions. The school opened in 1760 housing twenty female boarding students. The inmates were chosen by edict. Four of these female inmates were taken to San Luís Potosí from the city of Valladolid, now Morelia, in order to deal with the administration of the College. Before going to San Luis Potosí they were students of Santa Rosa Maria Boarding School. The assigned charges were those of Chancellor, Vice Chancellor, Major Gate House Keeper and Teacher. The rest of the inmates were from San Luís Potosí or places nearby. These inmates also had jobs to perform as: Nurse, Minor Gate House Keeper, Vestry Keeper, Revolving Window Keeper and cook among others. The school inhabitants celebrated elections, every year on January sixth, to choose their Chancellor and Vice Chancellor. The money that the school received each month was administered by a churchwarden who had to leave his property in guarantee in order to take the position.
El Colegio de San Nicolás Obispo fue fundado en la ciudad de San Luís Potosí gracias al dinero que dejó un rico minero y ganadero, Don Nicolás Fernando de Torres a finales del siglo XVII, pero se vio concretado hasta mitad del siglo XVIII, gracias a la intervención del entonces obispo de Michoacán, Pedro Anselmo Sánchez de Tagle quien aceleró el proyecto y elaboró sus constituciones. El Colegio abrió sus puertas en el año de 1760 albergando veinte niñas elegidas por edicto. Cuatro de ellas fueron llevadas a San Luís Potosí desde la ciudad de Valladolid, hoy Morelia, con la finalidad de encargarse de la administración de dicho Colegio. Las cuatro mujeres eran alumnas del Colegio de Santa Rosa María y los cargos que se les asignaron fue el de Rectora, Vicerrectora, Portera Mayor y Maestra. Las habitantes del Colegio, quienes eran originarias de la ciudad de San Luís Potosí y de sus alrededores, también tuvieron cargos dentro de él, como el de enfermera, refitolera, portera menor, sacristana, tornera, cocinera, entre otros. Las habitantes del Colegio cada año, el seis de enero, celebraban las elecciones para elegir entre ellas a su rectora y vicerrectora. El Colegio vivió del dinero que recibía mensualmente, el cual era administrado por un Mayordomo, quien para asumir dicho cargo debía dejar sus bienes en garantía.
