El convento de dominicas en Valladolid del Obispado de Michoacán. Principales motivos e influencias para profesar (1595-1733)

Abstract

This thesis focuses on the reasons why the women from Valladolid were entering nunneries in the seventeenth century, specifically the Dominican Sisters of St. Catherine of Siena. As part of the early history of the subject of the order of Preachers, its development in Europe and its subsequent arrival in the New World are taken up , giving an explanation of the situation in which the Bishopric of Michoacán was before the arrival of the religious , and the importance of the establishment of the convent. Are some of the most important aspects of daily life of nuns, as the responsibilities and roles tended throughout his life, as well as the main structure and operation of the convent. The main theme is divided into several sections which are integrated by the main causes of income like family, devotion, by social desirability or education, and even approached those without nuns live within the convent walls. Throughout the investigation some very interesting cases are treated as they demonstrate in one way or another, the main reasons were to enter the monastic life, one of the most significant evidence for its rarity is the Feliciana sores, who makes a motion to vacate his profession, as alleged he was forced by his uncles, and while she suffered from leave the convent, some others did to get in, making requests and demonstrating their qualities just to earn a place alongside the wives of God.

Esta tesis se centra en los motivos por los cuales las mujeres vallisoletanas del siglo XVII entraban a los conventos de monjas, específicamente al de Dominicas de Santa Catalina de Siena. Como parte de los antecedentes del tema se retoman los inicios de la orden de Predicadores, su desarrollo en Europa y su posterior arribo al Nuevo Mundo, dando una explicación de la situación en la que se encontraba el Obispado de Michoacán antes de la llegada de las religiosas, así como la importancia del establecimiento del convento. Se exponen algunos de los aspectos más importantes de la vida cotidiana de las religiosas, como los cargos y oficios que atendían a lo largo de su vida, así como la principal estructura y funcionamiento del convento. El tema principal está dividido en varios apartados que se integran por las principales causas de ingresos, es decir, familiares, por devoción, por conveniencia social o por educación, e incluso aborda a aquellas que sin ser monjas, viven dentro de los muros conventuales. A lo largo de la investigación se tratan algunos casos de gran interés, ya que demuestran de una u otra manera, los principales motivos que se tenían para ingresar a la vida monacal, uno de los testimonios más significativos por su rareza es el de Feliciana de las llagas, quien hace una petición para anular su profesión, ya que alegaba que había sido forzada por sus tíos, y mientras ella sufría por salir, algunas otras lo hacían para entrar, haciendo peticiones y demostrando sus cualidades con tal de ganarse un lugar junto a las esposas de Dios.
