The present thesis analyzes and describes how the smallpox vaccine has been one of the most important achivements of science during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, being used and defended by doctors and governments of those years. In some places was imposed by order of the states, which for the late nineteenth and early twentieh centuries came configured.
The children was one of the sectors most harassed by this disease, causing the rise in the number of deaths in this sector of the population. In Morelia, the arrival of the vaccine marked the beginning of the declive of smallpox because its distribution was a priority for the government and corporations.
El presente trabajo expresa como la vacuna contra la viruela ha sido uno de los logros más importantes de la ciencia durante fines del siglo XVIII y principios del XIX, siendo utilizada y defendida por los médicos y los gobiernos de esos años, llegando en algunos lugares a ser impuesta obligatoriamente por mandato de los estados, que para finales del siglo XIX y principios del XX venían configurándose. La infancia fue uno de los sectores más acosados por esta enfermedad, por ello el alza en el número de muertos ascendió inhóspitamente en este sector de la población. En México, Michoacán y principalmente Morelia, la llegada de la vacuna marcó el inicio de la disminución de los casos de viruela, pues su distribución fue una prioridad para el gobierno y las corporaciones.
