This document is a work of research whose objective is to study the political transition between the pre-Hispanic political system and the Spanish colonial regime. It analyzes the continuity of institutions and pre-Hispanic political traditions and their representatives, the indigenous nobility, in the framework of the establishment of the political institutions brought by the Europeans, and the rise of a new elite, to which the old indigenous governors sought to belong. Through the analysis of a period of time between 1520-1562, the Uanácaze lineage and its immediate hierarchy become our main protagonists, who, after peacefully recognizing the dominion of the Spanish crown, sought to maintain their privileged social position and political power. To that end, several factors were in their favor. The Uanácaze were the lineage that legitimized all the authority and power possessed by the political hierarchy, so their continuity and succession of governors belonging to said lineage was fundamental. Furthermore, the Uanácaze had the economic and military power, and the capacity to organize the indigenous society; aspects that they were losing control over as the Spanish domination was consolidated in Michoacán. However, it was a long process during which they continued to enjoy great authority and prestige over those that they used to govern, prevailing as demonstrated by the enormous political weight they had during the first decades of Spanish domination.
