Metaficción e intertextualidad en la novela El circo que se perdió en el desierto de Sonora, de Miguel Méndez

Abstract

The operation of the intertextual and metafictive phenomena within a novel’s narrative path is what we will try to analyze in the course of this thesis investigation. For this, we want to emphasize that in this work, what matters is to understand and then to resolve how these manifestations happen. The resolution to this approach will be verified in an analysis that determines how the metafictive and intertextual references are configured in the novel’s narrative discourse, how the different intertextual categories are related to their source text and, in addition, which recognized hypotexts are inserted and precede the novel The circus that got lost in the desert of Sonora (2002). On the other hand, this research reveals the existence of the problem of locating Miguel Méndez within Chicano Literature, but also as a writer of the Border Literature. Moreover, he is an author who undoubtedly belongs to the so-called Desert’s Narrative and to the North Literature and which, therefore, can be circumscribed as a transboundary author. The belonging of this writer’s work to these literary productions will be fundamented through the revision of what specialized critics have contributed to this subject to later contribute our own point of view in this matter, reflected in the thesis conclusions.

El funcionamiento de los fenómenos intertextuales y metafictivos dentro del recorrido narrativo de la obra es cuanto trataremos de analizar en el curso de la investigación de esta tesis. Para ello, queremos destacar que en este trabajo lo que importa es entender para posteriormente resolver cómo suceden estas manifestaciones. La resolución a este planteamiento se verificará en un análisis que determine cómo se configuran las referencias metafictivas e intertextuales en el discurso narrativo de la novela, cómo se relacionan las diferentes categorías intertextuales con su texto de origen y, además, qué hipotextos reconocidos se encuentran insertados y anteceden a la novela El circo que se perdió en el desierto de Sonora (2002). Por otro lado, esta investigación manifiesta la existencia de la problemática de ubicar a Miguel Méndez dentro de la Literatura Chicana, pero también como un escritor de la Literatura de la Frontera. Aún más, es un autor que indudablemente pertenece a la llamada Narrativa del Desierto y a la Literatura del Norte y que, por tanto, puede circunscribirse como un autor transfronterizo. Se fundamentará, entonces, la pertenencia de la obra de este escritor a estas producciones literarias mediante la revisión de lo que la crítica especializada ha contribuido a este tema para, posteriormente, aportar nuestro propio punto de vista del asunto reflejado en las conclusiones que de esto se desprenda.
