This paper attempts to approach intellectual figure and musical-poetic work of Gerhart Muench. Muench was born on March 23, 1907 in Dresden, Germany and died on December 9 in Tacámbaro, Michoacán, Mexico. He received musical training from an early age by his musician father, and then at the Conservatory of Dresden. Since the age of nine I had the opportunity to appear in public in a piano recital, which took place at the beginning of a brilliant career as a concert pianist, first in his hometown, then in other cities in Germany, to extend eventually also to other European countries such as Switzerland, France and Italy, being recognized as one of the greatest pianists of his time. But Muench musical activities were not limited to the piano performance, but more gradually included the composition of own musical works. He was seventeen when, in 1924 in Dresden, was presented the first time one of his compositions, a chamber concert; achieved shortly after being selected by Paul Hindemith 200 composers to present at the International Music Festival Donaueschingen a special work for mechanical piano; and other work was premiered at the opening of the second Bauhaus in Dessau by Paul Klee, known artist and also a violinist. Between 1928 and 1937, Muench lived mainly in France and Italy, to pursue, as well as concerts, recitals and musical composition, research on early music renaissance works. His very broad interests in literature, art, philosophy, anthropology, mythology and comparative religion provided him interact with other artists and intellectuals. In Italy he became friendly with the American poet Ezra Pound, collaborating with him on concerts in Rapallo and transcription of early music to modern instrumentation.
El presente trabajo intenta aproximarse a la figura intelectual y la obra musical-poética de Gerhart Muench. Muench nació el 23 de marzo de 1907 en Dresde, Alemania y murió el 9 de diciembre en Tacámbaro, Michoacán, México. Recibió enseñanza musical desde muy temprana edad por parte de su padre, también músico, y después en el Conservatorio de Dresde. Ya con la edad de nueve años tuvo oportunidad de presentarse en público en un recital de piano, lo que dio lugar al comienzo de una brillante carrera como pianista concertista, primero en su ciudad natal, después en otras ciudades de Alemania, para extenderse finalmente también a otros países europeos, como Suiza, Francia e Italia, siendo reconocido como uno de los más grandes pianistas de su tiempo. Pero las actividades musicales de Muench no se limitaban a la interpretación pianística, sino incluyeron poco a poco más la composición de propias obras musicales. Tenía diecisiete años cuando, en 1924 en Dresde, se presentó la primera vez una composición suya, un concierto de cámara; poco después logró ser seleccionado por Paul Hindemith entre 200 compositores para presentar en el Festival Internacional de Música de Donaueschingen una obra especial para piano mecánico; y otra obra fue estrenada en la inauguración de la segunda Bauhaus en Dessau por Paul Klee, conocido pintor y a la vez violinista. Entre 1928 y 1937, Muench vivió principalmente en Francia e Italia, para dedicarse, aparte de conciertos, recitales y la composición de obras musicales, a la investigación sobre música antigua renacentista. Sus muy amplias intereses por la literatura, las artes plásticas, la filosofía, la antropología, la mitología y las religiones comparadas le facilitaron relacionarse con otros artistas e intelectuales. En Italia entró en relación amistosa con el poeta norteamericano Ezra Pound, colaborando con él en los conciertos de Rapallo y en la transcripción de música antigua para instrumentación moderna.
