The philosophical problem of culture represents an important guiding thread that allows the cross-linking of the diversity of study objects in Antonio Caso’s body of work. Not only because he approached it in its many aspects, dimensions and facets, but also because his philosophizing originated explicitly from a personal concern for the predominantly warlike and dehumanizing world scenario of his time. Against this background, Caso formulated a philosophical proposal that sought to enable a broad and complex conception of existence and human life, which would lead to the development of a truly humanistic, synthetic and creative culture that would allow mankind to vindicate the moral character of all its endeavours and social relations, and reach the ultimate goal of its existence, which is collective realization. This thesis research focuses precisely on analyzing, reconstructing and assessing the treatment that Caso gave to the philosophical problem of culture, and aims to demonstrate that in Caso’s thought it is possible to find the simultaneous operation of a Mexican philosophy about culture and a philosophy about Mexican culture, displayed through philosophizing about, from and for culture, in general, and Mexican culture, in particular. That is to say, a philosophical reflection of multiple fronts, that attends to his philosophizing about culture, his philosophizing about Mexican culture, the different meanings that his concept of culture shows, the role and viability that he attributed to the work of the philosophy of culture within the various human disciplines, the capacity that he conferred to philosophy to deal with the particular problems of a specific socio-cultural reality, and his attempts to generate a proposal for social transformation that would respond to the needs of its immediate environment and, also, to the common conflicts of any circumstance.
El problema filosófico de la cultura representa un hilo conductor importante que permite enlazar transversalmente la diversidad de objetos de estudio trabajados en la obra de Antonio Caso. No sólo porque lo abordó en sus múltiples aspectos, enfoques y aristas, sino también porque su filosofar mismo nació explícitamente de una preocupación personal por el escenario mundial predominantemente bélico y deshumanizante de su época. Frente a este panorama, Caso formuló una propuesta filosófica que buscaba posibilitar una concepción amplia y rica de la existencia y la vida humana, que diera lugar al desenvolvimiento de una cultura verdaderamente humanista, sintética y creativa, que permitiera el hombre reivindicar el carácter moral de todas sus empresas y relaciones sociales, y alcanzar el fin último de su existencia, que consistía en su realización colectiva. Esta investigación de tesis se aboca, precisamente, a analizar, reconstruir y valorar el tratamiento que Caso dio al problema filosófico de la cultura, y se propone demostrar que en el pensamiento de Caso es posible encontrar la operación simultánea de una filosofía mexicana sobre la cultura y una filosofía sobre la cultura mexicana, desplegada a través de un filosofar sobre, desde y para la cultura, en general, y la cultura mexicana, en particular. Es decir, una reflexión filosófica de múltiples frentes, que atiende a su filosofar sobre la cultura, su filosofar sobre la cultura mexicana, las diversas acepciones que muestra su concepto de cultura, el papel y viabilidad que atribuyó a la labor de la filosofía de la cultura dentro de las diversas disciplinas humanas, la capacidad que confirió a la filosofía para ocuparse de los problemas particulares de una realidad socio-cultural específica, y sus intentos por generar una propuesta de transformación social que respondieran a las necesidades de su entorno inmediato y, también, a los conflictos comunes de cualquier circunstancia.
