The dynamics and changes in relation to the new family structures that are taking place in housing, have generated various challenges in relation to new ways of living and how housing models were designed in response to traditional structures. Currently there are several proposals for new housing models, which even aim to reduce environmental impacts, however, many of these are not economically viable and inaccessible to most of the population in our country. With the objective of developing solutions for decent and affordable housing, with a focus on economic, social and environmental sustainability, it is proposed to rethink the current habitability, before new constructions, taking as a central tool the furniture, considered as a small scale of architecture, but of great impact thanks to its flexibility, low investment cost and the intimate approach with the inhabitants in their daily lives. The study focuses on social housing in Mexico and minimum spaces, in order to contribute to the global problem of current conditions. A diagnosis is generated in the development “Villas del Pedregal” one of the largest in Latin America, and other housing in the same city in order to observe a comparative and expand the possibilities. Based on the methodology “design thinking”, a personalized design has been created that begins by generating a reflection on the importance of interior spaces through historical background and current references, and through research, current problems and the role of furniture are exposed. Through an approach with the inhabitants, opportunities are identified through the same problems, leading to propose a cooperative model for the sustainable manufacture of furniture.
